The F.B.I. and Justice Department prosecutors are investigating front-office officials for the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful teams in baseball over the past two decades, for hacking into the internal networks of a rival team to steal closely guarded information about player personnel.

Investigators have uncovered evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of the Houston Astros that housed special databases the team had built, according to law enforcement officials. Internal discussions about trades, proprietary statistics and scouting reports were compromised, the officials said.

The officials did not say which employees were the focus of the investigation or whether the team’s highest-ranking officials were aware of the hacking or authorized it. The investigation is being led by the F.B.I.’s Houston field office and has progressed to the point that subpoenas have been served on the Cardinals and Major League Baseball for electronic correspondence.

Spygate comes to MLB. Have to wonder of this happens all the time.

If I were to guess this is all Wren's fault!

How do you spin this if you're the Cards. "We're sorry, our employee was trying to look at porn and instead accidentally hacked the Astros computer system."

This is pretty darn serious. Knowledge of the breach may not be imputed to the highest levels within the organization (unless actual facts of same are discovered), but the benefit of that knowledge must be imputed to all levels of the organization.. and the existing cybercrime and hacking laws are pretty onerous on this topic.

If (and it's a big if) this is true, the Cardinals ought to be heavily penalized - both in terms of fines and players (whether that be forfeiting draft picks in addition to player compensation going to Houston) - all inaddition to those individuals responsible going to jail.

So... I guess this is the new Moneyball market inefficiency? Lol. What an idiotic thing to do.

The leak was first uncovered when the perpetrator uploaded hacked files to a site called 'AnonBin' which allows crackers to anonymously share the contents of their exploits. That's pretty amateurish.

The Astros database was pretty interesting; talked about the Marlins asking for Carlos Correa/George Springer for Giancarlo Stanton and other trade information. IIRC there was also information on the Brady Aiken saga in addition to traditional scouting reports. There is really no question about the advantages it could have provided St. Louis. The question now becomes: was Houston the only team targeted?

That's one hell of a trade it's a shame we couldn't see Stanton in Houston.

Yeah I believe all the trade discussion stuff got leaked last year. Now I guess they found out who did it. Sucks for the Cards.
