I wonder where they get the contact rate numbers and how favorable that is to the comps we have mentioned.
I'm wondering if those are actual contact numbers or if they're simply using his non-K rate, which is about 82% and isn't all that great.

I don't know why you wouldn't take the first 6-8 years of Coleman's career or the middle portion of Nixon's. They both ranged from slightly above-average to pretty good in this stretches. I think you're valuing OPS too much and not putting enough focus simply on OBP for these leadoff SB-heavy types.
I agree with you on Hamilton, though even he has been serviceable at least given everything he brings.
There's no doubt there is reason for caution when looking at Smith. AAA will be a big test for him, and that's where Hamilton was exposed to some degree. But there is definitely reason for hope and excitement, as pretty much everyone has said. Beyond that, we just have to wait and see.
It's interesting to me, though, that Hamilton became an elite prospect, into the top 20, after his AA season. Mallex still probably won't crack the top 100 and wasn't even on the radar before this year.
Coleman played essentially 6 full years (with the cards; first 6 years of career). His OBP was .320, .301, .363, .313, .316, .340. He was a bad defender. Overall over those 6 seasons he hit .265/.326/.339 with a WAR of 11.9.
I guess to cherrypick Nixon from 90-96; his numbers were .284/.358/.327 with a WAR of 10.2. That would be acceptable, I guess.
So you wouldn't take Coleman's 11.9 WAR over 6 seasons, but you would take Nixon's 10.2 over 7?
Klaw chat....he just said Mallex was fine but not a star. We should move Peraza to 2B or SS to increase trade value..I agree with Klaw.
Fine would be solid for Smith. He'd be a cheap star for a long time. And maybe we could get something for Maybin. But we can't field a team full of fine. We will need at least one other top level hitter to pair with FF, ideally 2. If we had 3 plus hitters, then we can fill around those guys with JaceOnBase and Mallex types.
Nixons offensive numbers were better/more acceptable. Although that time period includes an extra year of play from Nixon, it's less games played and a few hundred less at bats. Nixon wasn't really a full-time starter and never really got more than 125 games. But, he at least got on base and played good defense when he did.
Exactly. I say trade Peraza plus 2 of Jenkins/ManBan/Folty/Fried/etc for Tulo to play 3B. Stick Mallex in CF, shift Maybin to RF, and Markakis to LF. Find a catcher to pair with CB.
1. Jace 2B
2. Markakis LF
3. Tulo 3B
4. Freeman 1B
5. Maybin RF
6. Simmons SS
7. CB/whoever C
8. Pitcher
9. Mallex CF
Their oWAR numbers were basically identical through those stretches; Coleman actually had the higher range.
Regardless, they were both pretty clearly acceptable players during these stretches. Your OBP only has to be acceptable if you're stealing 100+ bases at a clip that is 80% or better.

So your argument is that Mallex would be acceptable if he played at the level that Coleman and Nixon played for a portion of their career?
I'd rather trade for donaldson.
We need a 3B, C and or corner OF who can really hit. Who we get would depend on who they are and how much it costs. If we can get someone on the cheaper end b/c of a Brewer fire sale then Great.
I think we should be in a position of strength. Peraza is young and we don't have to move him. We don't have to move any guys not named CJ.
Nice Braxton mention. Looks like he will make KLaw's next list:
Ryan (Indy)
what kind of ceiling do you give Braxton Davidson?
Klaw 2:48 PM ET
4 WAR? Middle of the order bat, held back by defensive limitations. But real chance for a high OBP, 20-25 HR guy.
I'll take that in LF.
That's still not a good offense and what happens when Tulo misses his 40 games per year?
I do know there are concerns he can stick in LF. I like him quite a bit less at 1B.
