There is actually a chance he will improve in that dept
In all seriousness... I don't think I could think of another player who played nearly every game, was paid over $10M, and did not hit a HR... maybe ever

GOLD glove.
3 yrs and 33 million left.
You were just talking about signing a LF in the other thread.
Take a gander at some of the LF's signed in the offseason.
Cuddyer - 0.3 WAR (costs 22 million plus a draft pick)
Hanley - -0.3 WAR (cost 88 million plus a draft pick)
Melky - -0.8 WAR (cost 42 million plus a draft pick)
Obviously I'm cherry picking considering there were some good value signings. I was one of those that preferred Aoki among other alternatives. I don't like the Markakis contract, but considering the alternatives that were possible I feel like we were lucky.

Well this thing turned around quickly since Sunday evening.
Understood. And I'm scared of the FA market in general.
if the Markakis deal was 2 years I'd love it. Even 2 years at 26 I'd be ok with it. But 4 years and 44.......
I didn't like the process behind the contract, but let's say he's a 2.5 WAR player at the end of this year (his projection via ZIPS).
Markakis at 3 years 33 million (with no draft pick compensation) isn't terrible.
In all fairness there is nothing wrong with the Markakis contract in and of itself. I thought it was a slight overpay at the time but he has outperformed that to this point. But what is a contract that we needed? We are rebuilding and was there a particular need for Nick at 4 years? Really good chance he is not playing to this level in 2017.
That's fair and that criticism will hold true forever.
But a lot of people act like his contract is destined to be a burden like Upton/Uggla. There is seriously no chance of that.
I agree the process was bad, but Nick isn't a bad player and doesn't deserve the criticism he gets.
Eh, what will the next 3 years look like? Any optimism that he will be even better?
That is a good point and more of a criticism of the front office handing it out and then rebuilding.
Why are you so negative?!?!
