Jeb Bush: People Need to Work Longer Hours...

So, what do you do? Hire the cheap labor or pay more?

When I get work done on my house I get multiple quotes and never go with the most expensive or the cheapest options. Plus one of my close friends is in construction so he can give me a review of lots of people.

Your small time example is not the same thing even though you believe it is.

But, why don't you go with the most expensive option? You can afford it, right?

This micro example is not relevant to the implications of what outsourcing jobs has on America.

Either way, there are no construction companies that don't use Mexicans.

So you are saying, it's ok for you to do it, but its not ok for corporations to do it despite the fact that both of you "can afford" to pay what it would take? Your justification is that its just little ole you so you can act under different standards?

Am I overflowing with revenues? Am I able to take lavish vacations?

I would wager my profits as a percentage of my overall revenues pales in comparison to these corporations.

Bingo.

Everyone that isn't in a position to make these decisions say what they would do if they were in that spot, but they'd make the same decisions as the decision makers if they were in that spot

So just admit that you live by different standards than you expect American corporations to live by.

No, because that is not accurate. If I was making record profits I would be able to spend more. Sadly, I am not.

I do well for myself but I live in Ny and therefore my take home after all my expenses is not enough to spend irresponsibly.

Anything more than "shelter, food, safety" is greed, right?

So you are going to ban trade with China? I mean, good luck with that. The ripple effect would be crippling.

any major change

which i think we need

is going to hurt in the short term.

i want a cultural change in this country to how we view greed and business. the bottom line of just making more shouldn't be the only goal imo. it should be to build up the community, state, country etc etc as well as making money. if that means making 19 million dollars instead of 24 million, so be it.

we just need something when we get to the other side that works

i am not 100% sure what needs to happen and would have to read or talk to others for options etc

i'm not for banning trade with China though

LMAO that's great. Gilesfan's dream world is 16 hours of work in a factory and go home poor.

Heaven forbid a Presidential candidate promote a stronger work ethic.

Vol hits the nail on the head RE: part time workers / unemployed.

Do you really think "ethic" has a non-negligible impact on—much less a predominating causal correspondence to—underemployment in the US?

You could always quit the factory and go find a better job.

We are worth whatever someone offers to pay us to work for them.

Again

Well since there are fewer factories because we are ok with only a handful of people running the country there isn't much to choose from.

I spend a good bit of my day watching glue or paint dry until i get to the next stage. I imagine a good number of posters work in IT where downloads can take hours until the next phase.
What do you suggest, they go mop a floor ?

The merits of our own productivity/leisure ratios notwithstanding, do you really want to exist in a society wherein "productivity" is the ultimate and totalizing end? Do you not think we should striving for a society wherein all folks have some (we'll leave quibbling over the exact amount for now) leisure time/space in order to cultivate interests outside of their capitally "productive" selves?

I would love to have more leisure time. I have this many vacation days at my disposal. ..... (0) Productively is a very important issue; more productivity = less hours. I know American workers work more than European counterparts; but what is the ratio of wasting time on the internet in American workers vs. European?
