The Crime Dog

Arizona Fall Leaguer
Braves broadcast just showed the highlights when the pressbox caught on fire the day they acquired McGriff. This got me thinking why isn't this guy in the HOF. He was a premier slugger in his era and with the strike shortened season he would've easily topped 500 home runs. Look at his stats and tell me what you think? BTW I'm sorta bias, he was one of my favorite players growing up.

There are much better players from that era that need to go in first.

Like who? Bagwell? What first baseman were more solid than him during this time that wasn't on roids? And there are people who believe Bagwell was on roids. We know about McGwire and Palmeiro. McGriff was a clean player that performed well during the steroid era.

What evidence is there that Bagwell took 'roids? Besides, there are more than just first basemen that deserve to go in first.

Hall of Fame, not hall of very good.

Underrated player, but I don't even feel like he was a top 5 player at his own position during his career. For sure a couple years he was up there, but even if you leave off the guys with actual connections to roids, you still have to compare him to guys like Bagwell, Thomas, Thome, Helton, and Murray.

He is not in because he missed 500 homers and he seems to be thrown in with all juicers, despite showing no signs of juicing. Some voters have refused to vote for anyone from that era.

Thomas and Murray are already in. If McGriff hit 7 more home runs, he would already be in too. Look at his post season stats too he outhit all the ones you named in the playoffs. Plus Todd Helton shouldn't get it, he didn't even hit 400 homers at Coors Field.

He should absolutely be in. He was incredibly consistent for like 17 straight years or so. He was also very good in the playoffs.

I mean he played 19 years and has a career OPS of .886. That's pretty dang good for that long of a career. He's right there with Willie McCovey and Eddie Murray.

Thome and Bagwell should certainly get in as well. I think Helton should get in too, but he was the Colorado factor.

In his prime though in the early 90's, he was always right up there with the best at 1b. Really only Frank Thomas was clearly better. And Frank Thomas was Lou Gehrig like in his prime. McGriff was already in his 30's when Bagwell and Thome broke out. If McGriff had been in his prime during the mid 90's to late 90's when everyone was hitting bombs then who knows what numbers he would have put up in his mid to late 20's.

But those are players he has to be compared to, regardless if they are in the HOF or not. They are his peers.

And homers aren't the only stat that matters. 7 more homers doesn't make McGriff a lock for the HOF. HOF voters make their selections based on more than simply home run totals.

Helton, despite having far fewer at bats, had more hits than McGriff. Likewise, he also collected more doubles and triples. And Helton maintained a career .316 batting average compared to .284 for McGriff. And not to mention Helton has more awards such as GG and SS which HOF voters love as well.

And he batted in Coors his whole career.

What players from that era aren't in that have better stats than McGriff?

Well, for first base you have Bagwell, Thome, and McGwire for starters. Then for other positions you have Bonds, Sosa, and Sheffield. And if you really want to stretch the era, Andruw and Manny Ramirez too.

McGwire, Bonds, and Sosa will likely not get in (PED users). I'm not even sure Bags or Sheff get in either. Manny last time I checked was still playing for Cubs minor league and coaching. If not he retired this year.

I'm sorry, but if you look at his numbers from 1988-2002 and don't think he's a Hall of Famer, I don't know what to tell you. He was remarkably consistent.

Was Bagwell ever implicated?

We're not talking about who will get in, we're talking about who deserves to get in.
