Don't forget that ISIL does almost 100% of their recruiting online, primarily via social media. It's conceivable that they attracted him this way. Ask the Germans, French, British, Scandinavians how big of a problem it is for them.

Was he a sleeper? Probably not.
Was he influenced by ISIL propaganda/digital compatriots? Likely.

We could wipe out ISIL in a second if they were a real threat. We could wipe out Al Qaeda in a second if they were a real threat. WE're more at risk from our police than we are of any external terrorist threat.

How would we accomplish that? If you want ot talk about ISIL, let Assad off his leash. He will wipe them out cause he's a dictator. Same reason Saddam kept radical Islam in check. If you want to cut money ties, look no further then "allies" UAE and Saudi Arabia. Here's how to kill radical islam. Invest billions in cheap alternative energy so no nation needs oil to be a functioning world power.

So first we move Israel to Montana and then we start supporting Bashar al-Assad. I stand by my comments about liberals and foreign policy.

But what, if anything, can be done about that?

I'm so much older than most who post here, but I lived through the era when there was a communist behind every tree and things like fluoride in the water were derided by some nuts as a communist plot to dilute the sperm count of American males. I don't want to make light of ISIL because they are obviously contributing to the mess in the Middle East that is leaking out to the West, but I think this is what happens when you have a lot of young men adrift--physically, economically, emotionally, and spiritually--in the world. Mr. Oily Rags meet Mr. Errant Spark.

Hawk, hard to say what produces the malaise. I think one of the issues (and I'm not bashing here) is that the privileged throughout the world have moved beyond the simple survival strata of Maslow's hierarchy while the non-West either hasn't moved beyond that for some and that for those who have been able to move up the self-actualization pyramid, there isn't a societal infrastructure that accommodates that, leaving the notion of progress empty. People get educated (as they should), but there is no opportunity for them once they are educated, which leads to a clash between expectations and reality which in turn leads to resentment.

Maybe I need to throw big "I'm not serious" tags around when I use absurdist examples.

Read the context If Isis was a threat we could wipe them out. I don't think ISIS is a threat, I don't even think they're anything more than a small CIA trained terror cell who's sole purpose is to get us back on the ground in that region. I don't think they're even a moderate threat in reality to us but just another piece in the perpetual war machine ran by the wealthy of the world.

And the montana thing was just me being silly because I can't take people who want to use our tax dollars to prop up Israel seriously. They'll get enough money from private individuals to keep "fighting the fight" Similar to what happened in America where Irish Americans would give money to the cause of Irish liberation from Britain.
 
That's insane. You're teetering on the level of bat **** crazy if you think ISIS is some small cell. Tell that to thousands of little girls who have been raped and sold off into sexual slavery by iSIs and the families of thousands how have been tourtered by that small group.

ISIS has under 200K militants by most estimations. That's small. We already have in place an ISIL counter as well with Kataib Hezbollah.
