Trade Deadline/Rumors thread

Sorry to go off on a tangent here, but this pisses me off every time I see a reference to it.

Why the hell are the Orioles having to pay the Nationals that much every year? It just makes it that much harder for the Braves (and the rest of the division for that matter) to compete when the richest team in the league is getting subsidies on top of their already sufficient revenues.

I agree, but although money might buy you a ticket to the promised land it doesn't guarantee it. I'm personally content to watch Washington strangle itself with large contracts. Look how well it's worked out with Werth and Zimmerman.

Also, richest team in the division, maybe, for a while -- but that'll eventually change when NYM becomes solvent and we see what revenues in Cobb look like.

Oops, sorry, I was looking at 2013 figures. Nevertheless, they are spending with the likes of LAA/NYY/BOS and that's just not likely sustainable given their demo.

Mark Lerner: “We’re beyond topped out [...] Our payroll has skyrocketed to like $140 million. It’s in the papers. I don’t think we can go much further with the revenue streams that we have.”

That quote was from 2014 before some of the Orioles stuff came out. Since then they've spent another 20-25 million. As I said, I don't think anyone knows what there payroll figure will be.

Right, before the Scherzer deal (which came after the MASN deal -- so you could make the argument that those funds have been appropriated).

Overall, next years team would lose the 1.4 WAR from Span (based on 2015). Are you an idiot or just hard of reading? Whether the 1.4 was in 5 games or 162; that is what they are losing based on right now. It's not rocket science for most.

You said "Span has given them pretty much nothing." Is 1.4 WAR in 59 games "pretty much nothing," or were you making stuff up to prove how amazing the Nats will be forever and ever? Let's address your original words. Is 1.4 WAR in 59 games "pretty much nothing?" or is it pretty good production? I think I read what you said fine - and if you think 1.4 WAR in 59 games is "nothing" some MLB teams would love to laugh at you.

Huh, he's saved 6 runs in only 287 innings in left field (UZR/150 of 28.8) He blows out every defensive metric in his time in left field.

You're right, sorry. I misread his numbers as having mostly played LF this year. And this is a case where BR and Fangraphs differ greatly. BR has him at 0.7 dWAR this year. But I'll concede that he's played great defense this year.

Bc the Orioles own a majority stake in MASN and they are supposed to pay the Nats fair market value for the broadcast rights to show Nationals games, but have been paying far less what market value is.

And saying Taylor will "almost certainly" provide a higher WAR than Span will this year is also asinine. He will be a big negative on offense, and it could get worse. Again, Span has the same WAR in 59 games this year that Taylor has in 82. THIS year.

Yeah, soon the Mets are going to be the payroll king of the division and everyone is going to have to deal with that pitching staff. The hope is they continue to make stupid decisions because they are set up nicely for the future.

Tulo is going to be an albatross.

Here are his games played:

07-155

08-101

09-151

10-122

11-143

12-47

13-126

14-91

15-87

He's 30 so he's on the bell curve trending downward (backed up by his big decline in walks and increase in K's this year) His power is down. He's hitting .300 due to an unusually high BABIP and has benefited from playing in Colorado.

He's gets something like 20 mil per year all the way to 2019 plus 14 mil in 2020. And he now has a full no trade clause.

I think he will not age well. But, that will be mitigated by playing in Toronto a bit.

Based on reading; the Nats will have to replace 1.4 WAR from Span (bc that's what he's given them this year). HOly ****ing Heyward. Are you really dense or do you have trouble understanding? Lets try again...slower:

-Span is a free agent that is likely leaving.

-Span has provided a 1.4 WAR in 2015.

-In 2016, when they have to replace Span, they will have to replace his 1.4 WAR that he's provided in 2015.

-So next year, Taylor will have to replace the 1.4 WAR (so far) from Span.

-So what they will be trying to replace is 1.4 WAR (so far) They aren't having to replace 1.4 WAR in 59 games; they are having to replace 1.4 WAR in 162 games (obv if Span comes back in 2015, that 1.4 number likely increases)

-So far this year, Taylor has a 1.4 WAR in half a season

So, you think Taylor won't be able to put up a 1.4 WAR next year? (or whatever Span ends up providing...slightly higher depending on if or when he comes back)

That's cool, he's only done so in half a season this year. Interesting "asinine" logic.

You're obviously right on what Span has provided; what you're missing is what the Nats have gotten out of the games other OFs have produced in Span's place. It may be negative value for all I know, but they're not just replacing Span's 59 games. Those 162 games will be played by someone, whether it's Span or not.

Dude, what?
Yes, Taylor has the same WAR as Span does this year - in 23 more games. Span, in all likelihood, will finish with a higher WAR than Taylor this year, and a higher WAR than 1.4 that will need to be replaced. Span will likely be close to 3 WAR this year. Again, that is not "pretty much nothing," and I think it's far from a guarantee Taylor produces that next year. Taylor will need to improve to replace Span. A guy like him, who Ks a **** ton, is far from a guarantee to improve, especially when he isn't particularly young. Span was also at 4 WAR last year and 3.4 the previous two years. Taylor, with his below-average bat, is not a sure thing to replace that.

So, you think Taylor won't be able to put up a 1.4 WAR next year?

Where did I say that, or suggest it?
I don't think he will "easily" put up a 3 WAR like Span will come close to this year because his bat has massive holes that could continue to be exposed. I never once said he's incapable of anything; I said he's far from a guarantee to "easily replace" Span's production, which you originally described as "pretty much nothing."

It may be negative value for all I know, but they're not just replacing Span's 59 games. Those 162 games will be played by someone, whether it's Span or not.

The other CF has been Michael Taylor, who will be the one replacing Span though so you can't use the aggregate number. If it wasn't for Taylor, it would likely be a negative or replacement level player.

The bottom line with the point I made, is that they production they've gotten out of Span in 2015 should easily be matched in 2016 based on defense alone. The production Span produced in the prior couple years will not likely be matched. The guys they are losing (besides Zimmermann) have given them little this year. (Span, Fister, Desmond)
