The Marlins being cheap once again. Gave up what will be a top ~40 pick just so the Dodgers would pick up all the money.

Latos deal indeed done with #Dodgers, who take rest of his $9.4M and Morse’s $7M for this season and Morse’s entire $8M for 2016.

It's amazing that Miami keeps getting away with their buy/sell act.

Sign me up - would take Walker or Max Kepler in a heartbeat.

That would be awesome but I highly doubt either one will be on the table. The demand for power makes Walker too valuable and Kepler is having a huge breakout year. The Twins seem to have always valued Kepler's tools and have waited for him to do exactly what he's done this year. According to MLB, Walker is 11th among the Twins prospects and Kepler is 7th. For Johnson we'd be lucky to get someone in the 20-30 range.

If Johnson were to go to the Twins I would target Zach Jones to get back. Jones is a reliever who can hit the upper 90's. He's not got much in the way of off speed pitches and has struggled a good bit but he has a chance to be something out of the pen. He strikes guys out but needs to learn to control his walks. He's walked almost 6 per 9 this year. But there's definite talent there. Maybe our pitching coaches could do something with him and if they can he could be a back end of the pen guy.

I've heard at least 10 teams mention him [Jim Johnson], I bet. As one of those classic deadline-day bullpen-depth moves

Has any team ever traded 3 guys named Johnson at the deadline? #Braves have already dealt Kelly Johnson, also looking to move Jim & Chris

We have to be blown away to move our Johnsons.

Morse is bascially an older more expensive Scott Van Slyke. Seems odd to take him back too. I guess they had to.

BTW:Rival executives beginning to wonder if SD's best play with Justin Upton now might turn out to be taking the compensation draft pick.

There seems to be a pattern developing with JUp. He was traded to the Braves for a package that most thought was light. He was then traded to the Padres for a package that most thought was light (including John Hart). And now SD might have to give him a QO versus trading him at the deadline. It starting to seem that - for whatever reason - league execs don't value him as the premium player that he appears to be on the surface.

I think he's viewed as a selfish player who is out for himself. Those guys go for the money. So teams might not want to invest knowing they won't be able to woo him into sticking around at a discount.

Why should Justin give any team a discount? He already did that once with the team that drafted him, and they traded him because he wasn't white and "gritty" enough.

He forfeited a few million for security. Lets not call that contract more than what it is. He will have made 52 Mill before FA.

Not the point. Why should he give a discount to anyone? I hate how fans think certain players owe teams something, especially ones like Justin who haven't spent their entire career with one team.

I agree, he doesn't owe anyone anything.

I thought it was kinda the tertiary point from what I read. Sorry.

Per Crasnick

Fielding calls on Gomes and AJ- AJ viewed as a back up catcher per Crasnick and what I would imagine would be a very solid bench bat.

Also, "plenty of interest" on Jim Johnson as he isn't owed much through the rest of the season.

There's nothing selfish about not giving a team a discount. Dude has about 10-15 years to make a bunch of money in a sport where there is no loyalty. Why should we call out Upton for looking out for his own interest and not the Padres for being willing to look out for their own interest?

He's entitled to do what he wants and doesn't owe anyone a discount. He's basically viewed like a Boras client. Teams don't trade for Boras clients at the end of their deals because they know they have no shot at retaining him. You can't blame him for not wanting to give a team a discount, but you can't blame a team for not wanting a sure fire rental either.
