Some people have toooooo much time! :cooter:

There's no question that the game has trended to protecting the offense, but, pardon the play on words, it's become offensive in the process. I'm not for out-and-out throwing at guys, but when guys act unprofessionally, how are they going to be admonished. Is Selig going to pick up the phone and tell Harper "Cool it a bit." I doubt it.

While the athleticism in the game has increased during my many years of fandom and become more graceful on the field, it has certainly become more graceless in many ways. I simply can't stand the showboating and the problem is, guys like Harper, Upton, Ortiz, Werth, etc., they simply don't get it. Of course, when you get featured on ESPN for chest-thumping, it only encourages those types of actions. I don't want to sound like an old crank (which I am) when decrying all the "look at me (and love me)" behavior that a lot of athletes display these days. I doubt very highly that Hank Aaron ever admired one of his 755 career HRs the way that these guys do.

Thanks for the info thethe. It just seems like we've won every one-run game, although I know we haven't. Surprised the record in those games isn't better than .600.

nascpi, Uggla is all about that. I'm sure he's a great teammate and was ready to rumble (and could probably thump have the Nats' team by himself). I just can't stand watching him play and I'll admit, that's as much about me as it is about him.

I have to agree with all of this (and I realize it makes me a crank as well). I am really, really tired of all the showboating, and while I don't like the idea of a pitcher throwing at a batter's head (it can, and has, ended careers), I have no problem with a batter getting plunked in the back, or even better the thigh, for showboating. In fact, in some ways I feel like the game demands it.

Piss poor defense? Lol. You must not be watching the same guy as me. Not that defense matters anywhere but ss or cf, but his defense is fine. He is who he is, and he gets on base an awful lot for a guy that everyone wants gone. A walk is the same as a hit. And he's leading this team in hr's. but yeah, Giles, he's an awful player. You should stick to watching the Gnats.

Uggla is getting on base 30,9% of the time; ignoring the walk is the same as a hit little league line.

I have a feeling you won't listen to defensive stats, but either way no one can reasonable say Uggla is anywhere close to a good or average defender. He's at -13 DRS this year.

Then again some people are saying Chris Johnson isn't a bad defender when he's clearly awful.

If you want to go by stats and such, Uggla and CJ are both awful defenders.

If you want to go by watching them on a daily basis, they aren't the best defenders but they usually make the plays you are supposed to make. Limited in range, but havent hurt us nearly as much as the stats probably show they should.

Bc pitchers or other defenders help Johnson/Uggla get out of the mess doesn't make them any better defenders. Just last night, Johnson could have cost the Braves the game with a bad error.

And I can live with that. It's risk/reward. Uggla isn't a gazelle, but he gets in front of the ball and usually does what he's supposed to do. He doesn't take many hits away, but he isn't Pele kicking the ball all over the infield either. Grading fielding is tough because some really unathletic guys are reliable in making the routine plays (think Renteria). Nice to have more, but you can't have everything.

Small sample. What about Ugglas diving catch the other night? Or CJs great play vs the Phillies the other day?

I don't think Teheran hit Harper because of the homerun trot so that article is pretty much a joke right away. Teheran hit Harper because Harper has hit three homers off Teheran to center/left. Teheran was just trying to take back control of the inside corner which you have to do against someone like Harper. Teheran even said he didn't even notice Harper's trot.

Of course Julio isn't going to admit that's why he hit Harper.

Gattis has good speed. But the ground moves every time he takes a step. That slows him down.

Teheran is definitely aggressive on the inner half, and he's hit several guys this year. That said, I do think the HBP was intentional.

Whatever the case, that matchup is going to be fun to watch in the future.

- I can see it both ways here. Did they think Julio WANTED to put the go-ahead run on base, in a 1-run game with 1 out, with the heart of their order coming up? I don't know.

- Julio has already hit 11 batters this year, was it intentional, eh, maybe not, maybe so.

- I don't mind Uggla, he's a great teammate, he hustles on every play. Yes, he K's too much, and isn't a great hitter. His defense has been surprisingly better than expected. I still hope he has one hot streak in him so we can trade him this winter, and LaStella takes over at 2B next year.

- I'm guessing one of our guys gets beamed though, i would guess JUp. If they or we are up big, i'd pull some starters out late in the game and put the backups in, don't wanna risk anything.

- Bryce is a hothead, he's a fiery player, i can understand why he was mad. And this is NOT the team he wants to mess with, we have some big dudes who would put him in his place.

- Very good win though, Julio pitched well, bullpen did it's job. Though LaRoche bailed us out, he swung at Ball 3 when Avilan didn't have nothing left in him. Probably would of walked him.

- Would probably hold out Heyward tonight, and have him back on Friday after some treatment. Nice to see Gattis come through, great piece of hitting there.
