GDT 8/6/13: Braves (Teheran) @ Nationals (Gonzalez) 7:05 PM

If Harper had just tied the game or hit the go ahead hr late in the game or maybe even a grand slam early on, I would accept his walk and bat flip, he would have done something meaningful. But bottom of the third, first run scored and down 13 and a half games? He's a douchebag, he deserved to get hit.

The way Mac was acting, I wonder if there was something said before the HBP by Harper to set him off. He never acts like that.

I think it was the reaction from Harper. Straight F-bombs and he wasnt trying to hide it. B-Mac got fired up about it, as I did, and was probably going to put Harper in his place. No catcher is going to allow a batter to talk to his pitcher like that. B-Mac is no different. I just would like to have seen West not hold him back.

Also, the look on Heywards face was priceless. It was a cmon really? REALLY? You gone do sumthing then do it look.

Saw the video this morning.

I just turned 60 and I remember old school baseball and Harper is just lucky that Bob Gibson or Don Drysdale wasn't on the mound. If Harper had chirped at either of them the way he was chirping at Teheran, they would have just said "Enjoy your chirping because after the next time I hit you with a pitch, you'll need to have your jaw wired shut for a month."

I've been really impressed with the team this season (although there is nothing that will make me like Dan Uggla as a player). I figured the bullpen would be good, but the starting pitching has been fantastic and that is a real surprise for me. And that is almost without exception, the key to a successful season. I still can't find the team's record in one-run games this year, but it has to be impressive. Walden and Avilan have been godsends and Kimbrel has been pretty much lights out. I'd still like another RHP in the bullpen for the playoffs (and I still say "if we make it"), but this is a pretty good looking team that is playing well right now.

Braves are 18-12.

If you go to espn standings and click "Expanded Standings" tab it will show you those results.

Im nowhere close to 60, but I have a similar old school mentality. I hate the way these guys pimp their homers nowadays....Ortiz, Upton, Werth, etc. The worst offender I've seen recently is Wil Myers, he's gonna himself or others drilled. I agree this wouldn't happen back in the day, but pitchers also get now get suspended a start or 2 when they throw at batters (and fined).

MLB also almost always punishes the person that retaliates which makes it that much more frustrating for pitchers.

What happened last night is part of baseball and it likely always will be. Hey, we haven't had a good brawl in awhile

Yeah, Dan frustrates me too. But check the replay of last night's incident. Dan came racing in faster than any infielder and he put himself closest to Harper and the approaching line of Gnats.

There's no question that the game has trended to protecting the offense, but, pardon the play on words, it's become offensive in the process. I'm not for out-and-out throwing at guys, but when guys act unprofessionally, how are they going to be admonished. Is Selig going to pick up the phone and tell Harper "Cool it a bit." I doubt it.

While the athleticism in the game has increased during my many years of fandom and become more graceful on the field, it has certainly become more graceless in many ways. I simply can't stand the showboating and the problem is, guys like Harper, Upton, Ortiz, Werth, etc., they simply don't get it. Of course, when you get featured on ESPN for chest-thumping, it only encourages those types of actions. I don't want to sound like an old crank (which I am) when decrying all the "look at me (and love me)" behavior that a lot of athletes display these days. I doubt very highly that Hank Aaron ever admired one of his 755 career HRs the way that these guys do.

Thanks for the info thethe. It just seems like we've won every one-run game, although I know we haven't. Surprised the record in those games isn't better than .600.

nascpi, Uggla is all about that. I'm sure he's a great teammate and was ready to rumble (and could probably thump have the Nats' team by himself). I just can't stand watching him play and I'll admit, that's as much about me as it is about him.

Lol, poor Uggla! So much animosity towards him. I'm ok with him. I think his defense has been a pleasant enough surprise during his time here that it's taken much of the sting out of his .200 averages. All the home runs help too of course. He is what he is, and I count on the others to pick him up at the plate until he can connect with one. Plus, he walks a lot too.

I wish I could throw beanballs at all you idiots who can't wait to jettison the team leader in home runs. It's like you think batting average matters. That's cute.

Anyway, why on God's earth would you start a fight with the kid from the drug cartel capital of the world? Teheran's seen some stuff. I wouldn't cross him with a chainsaw...

I was actually fine with Dan in that situation, he looked like he got in the middle to keep the peace. One thing I'll say about him, he's a great teammate.

He rushed over to give Harper a hug.

People that are fine with Uggla? People that like .200 average with piss poor defense because every 6th game he will hit a homer?

Hey now, Uggla's -13 DRS this year ain't so bad. Seriously, it really hasn't hurt us much thanks to Simmons and Freeman. However, I am afraid that come playoff time it might again.

It's really not animosity. I get he's a "three outcome" guy and those guys are underrated in some respects. I just think he's a square peg on this team's offense.
