Wood has seen a pretty steady decline in his fastball velocity since he came up. His velocity chart is eerily similar to Hanson's before he fell apart.

Thats essentially ever pitcher in history. Pitchers lose velocity in their mid 20s. .

Rangers look to be getting Hamels.
Then we gave up Peraza too. And a closer/Set up man.
I would do Wood for Oliveira right now. Especially factoring in rebuilding team
Is it an upgrade?? Olivera is 30. We aren't competing this year or next. Why take a 30 year old as the headliner for Wood our top 21 year old prospect?
It's the age that bothers me. It's very high risk. He could fall off a cliff.

Given how fond we are of gimpy elbows, Olivera kinda makes sense as a logical extent of the concept. I mean, dude has a blood disorder that might actually be life-threatening. TJ surgery is for amateurs.
Its possible that this is the case. Its also possible that Wood has another TJ surgery in the next 2 years and his caerer is over. I was all about trading Wood since the start of the season.
Yeah, the inclusion of Peraza is a bit puzzling for sure. They have to really like this kid Bird as a long term project. Supposedly he is very athletic and still has a projectable arm.
LIke you said, the deal to me is as follows:
Wood for Olivera
Peraza for Bird
Everything else for the comp pick and Paco.
Its a big if but if Olivera is as good as the scouts are saying then you have a legit impact bat at peanuts. That affords the Braves so much damn flexbility to make some moves.
I personally have always felt Wood is on the path to another TJ surgery. Until then he is a borderline TOR pitcher. I think Olivera will be an impact player in the big leagues for far longer than Wood.
