Implications of the Trade

The 2013 offense didn't do too bad in the NLDS... it was our pitching that sucked. Minor was the only one who showed up. And Freddy.

Championship team?

Debateable.

I liked Wren but the BJ/Uggla contracts were bad, and the farm system was one of the worst in all of baseball, now it could very well be the best in all of baseball depending what happens this winter.

Ownership did not give Wren the resources to go out and get the impact players necessary to seriously compete for a world championship. Idk what's difficult to understand about that.

Sorry to set the thread off track. The point I'm making is a couple good moves doesn't excuse you the rest of your tenure. You can argue all of Hart's big trades last winter will help the organization in the long run. But Thursday's trade abandoned the so-called philosophy. If that's the type of trade we can expect going forward, he shouldn't be running the front office.

And Olivera might hit 20 home runs one day if his elbow stays healthy.

If a GM is gonna give a solid young starter and highly-rated prospect for that because he fell in love with the guy after a couple workouts, I don't want him running the front office.

Frank Wren made some incredibly shrewd trades that helped this team compete when he wasn't getting adequate support from ownership to put a real championship team on the field.

But everyone was perfectly happy to throw him under the bus when Uggla crashed and burned and the BJ contract turned into a disaster.

I don't mind Olivera at his contract. And a lot of people discount the pick we got in return as well, probably because we don't yet have a name to attach to that pick. But we could end up with Olivera and another top 25ish pick.

I still don't lIke the trade, but it's possible we did in fact come away with two impact prospects from the deal.

I can't help but think that one of the reasons Hart traded Wood now to go along with some of our worthwhile veterans is so that the team would really lose its footing and fall way down in the standings. I think Hart really wants a protected top 10 pick, so that he can at least have the chance to sign a veteran starter this offseason, even if it's just a guy like Porcello.

It's actually a smart move, because he probably wouldn't sign one of the top guys if it meant giving up that pick.

Then scrap Markakis, AJ, Gomes, etc. as well. Play nothing but young guys and/or rookie.

C - Bethancourt
1B - Freeman
2B - Peterson
SS - Simmons
3B - Olivera
LF - Cunningham
CF - Maybin (could trade him as well)
RF - Terdo

See what ya got with these guys. Finish with the second or third worst record in the league, and there you go.

Porcello isnt a FA thankfully, Bos dumbly signed him before he even pitched for them this year.

But i kinda agree.

WHAAAAAAAAT? They sure gave him enough money to sign Melvin Upton, Jr., and give an extension to Uggla. He also signed a boatload of pitchers who didn't fare all that well. I agree that Wren didn't get an open checkbook at the deadline to fill weaknesses, but he had resources. He just spent them incorrectly.

He had some money, but he had to overpay for guys like BJ, Derek Lowe, etc. because he was not able to out and get frontline pitching that would have helped us win at least one playoff series. I think the trade deadlines most of those years speak for themselves. A bunch of tweaks, no real game changers.

Not to start anything or jump into you'll's argument but the reason for that was the lack of prospects, mainly impactful prospects.

When you mentioned shortstop depth, I looked up what had become of Cody McElroy. It turned out that the Braves' 19th round pick of 2014, and Rome's opening day SS, "retired" on or around May 24th at the ripe old age of 22. The 6-5 athlete was hitting only .168, but seemed to have a good deal of potential after moving up to Rome shortly after his pro debut and hitting two late-season homers there.

Another implication of trading Wood is that we lose our only reliable LH SP. Banuelos will get every opportunity to make the rotation since he'll be out of options, but I'm only counting on him as a 5th starter type. So not only do I think we'll now bring in a veteran SP, I think that SP is highly likely to be left-handed.

Here are the current LH FA options in order of quality (from my perspective):

David Price (30)

Scott Kazmir (32)

Mark Buehrle (37)

Wei-Yin Chen (30)

Brett Anderson (28)

Jaime Garcia (29)

J.A. Happ (33)

Another trait that the Braves will prioritize is a high-character, leadership guy to mentor the young SPs. My understanding is that Chen does not speak English, so I think that will be a limiting factor in the Braves' eyes. The $ on Price will definitely be an issue . . . and maybe on Kazmir too. Buehrle or Anderson seem like the most likely targets.

Buehrle has seemed almost destined to be here, IMO.

Price would no longer cost a draft pick. Wonder if he will be the right player at the right time.

Please note I am still not in favor of long-term contracts for pitchers. Full stop. Period.

But the current office may have a different view. They did seem to have some interest in Lester.

Yeah and he also said the rebuild has been accelerated after the Melvin salary dump. His quotes make you think so.

I'd be pretty surprised if they don't have a different view after the Wood trade. With us trading Wood we have pretty much zero shot to compete in 2016 or 2017 without signing a top end starter to pair with Miller. I don't really see how we don't sign at least a high end #2 starter this offseason.
