GDT: 8/6/15 MARLINS @ BRAVES

And right, we don't have to compare ourselves to the Mets. What they have is unmatched. What other team has that? If we're sunk because we don't have it, so is everyone else except the Mets.

That's not really true.

Fried is.

Shelby is.

We also didn't really trade anyone of Beltran's caliber (yes, I'm aware WAR says Jason is better; I don't agree, and Beltran's track record was great). Dickey was fresh off a Cy Young (but that trade is still terrible, to me. that's the cost of going for it).

Well first of all, Beltran was for a 2 month rental, and they still got an ace prospect.

Fried is a question mark at this point, coming off of Tommy John. Shelby I've seen touted as having more of a #2 upside than dominant ace.

It's not just the Mets. Look at all of the rookies coming out this year who have been elite from the start. When you see all of this going on around the league, and it doesn't happen for us, and doesn't appear likely to happen for us since we don't have the high upside prospects, it's disheartening.

I hope we make a move in the rotation and sign Latos and Samardzija.

Samar

Shelby

Latos

Teheran

Ban, Minor, Perez, Wisler, etc (nice depth if we make this move, which we can use to trade for offense if necessary)

For the bullpen I would go after Feliz, Eric O', and Tommy Hunter.

If we did that, we could turn around and put together a nice pitching package for Soler while he's on the cheap because of a bad year. Plenty of other options, too.

Markakis LF
Olivera 3B
Freeman 1B
Soler RF
Asshole C
Maybin CF
Jace 2B
Simmons SS
P

That's not horrible.

I think if he could play defense well or at least be a backup in CF, he'd have a shot as a 4th OF, but I don't think he can do either.

I'm hoping Garcia, Castro, and eury finish strong. They could be decent bench players going into next season

Who are you talking about, specifically?
There are also a ton of guys who went in the top 5 in recent draft coming up....guess what....we haven't had picks that high.
Allard also has a ton of potential. Miller has been really, really good this year, and every team would love to have him.

I'm not saying Miller is trash, but think playoffs. We're always going to be matched up against teams in a short series who have at least 1 or 2 legit aces. We just don't have that guy on our team or in our system.

As for the top 5 picks, they usually don't pan out. Freeman and Heyward, who weren't even top 5 picks, impacted for us immediately. Look at all of the young stars in this year's all star game. How many were top 5 picks?

But you were talking about "all these ace pitchers coming up." A lot of them were high picks.
And yeah, the farm was in shambles. How much did you expect to be done in less than a year? I still believe in Teheran and that he can turn it around, and I don't see why Shelby can't become a rock at the top of the rotation (if he hasn't been this year, which he kinda has). We don't know a ton about Fried, but he was highly-touted and is still thought of highly. And some people love Allard.

I honestly think this is a case of "the grass is always greener." We have a ton of SP depth and plenty of guys that have a chance to be real difference makers. The odds of at least one of the following prospects:

Touki
Allard
Jenkins
Fried
Man-Ban
Sims
Sanchez
Soroka
Bird

being pretty damn good is likely better than what a lot of other teams have (and I'm leaving some guys out, too, that have a shot to make an impact). Two of them were in the org. before this year. We needed a much better farm, and we have a lot of high-quality arms IMO.
