The money included in the deal probably helped the Braves get at least a little better prospect back. But I am not surprised Gomes turned out to have more trade value than AJ. AJ is hated around baseball and a bad defensive catcher. Plus despite hitting well this year and much of his career he is getting old. So even that latter plus is likely to be over soon. While Gomes continues to bring good leadership and can still hit lefties, etc. But mainly it's the leadership Gomes brings that helps teams win that make teams want him more IMO.

Note, KC wanted Gomes but declined to take AJ according to MLBTR. They know the difference between a good leader and someone like AJ.
