Around Baseball 2015 Edition

Stay way from him. Typical having his best year in a contract year. Plus he'll be 30 next year. Look at his numbers the previous two seasons with Oakland and Boston.

I'm not saying sign him. I'm just saying every FA out there has a price. The job of our FO is to pick up a couple players at good value. We should be focusing on what is good value for the various players we think the Braves should consider.

Cespedes price is going to exceed anything the Braves would pay. Are you people new to this free agent thing? My guess is the Mets lock him up shortly after the playoffs are over.

Don't think it will be shortly after the playoffs. He probably waits to see what offers are out there before signing. But yes I think he ends back up with the mets

It's their pitching, before this rough patch, all their SP's had sub-3 ERA.

Their pitching first and foremost. Solid rotation and a good bullpen. They catch the ball without being too flashy about it (what they lose offensively with Holliday out, the probably gain in defense). They are solid fundamentally. One of the things that helps them offensively is that while they lack a single premier-level power HR hitter (Grichuk may become one) they make up for in having guys spread throughout the line-up that can put a charge in the ball (much like some of the Braves' teams in the 1990s).

And what makes pitching look good? Great defense. Cards have the biggest difference between their team FIP and team ERA. And I would argue that difference is from their awesome defense. Royals are the same way.

the defense definitely helps, but their pitching is always good. it was really good for years before Heyward started playing RF for them, and I bet anything they aren't gonna try too hard to re-sign him. there is a ton of talent in their rotation. they have clearly had a focus on developing pitching.

Their defense is good. I wouldn't say it is awesome. Peralta is an average at best SS.

Defense helps pitching, but the Cards are 5th in Ks and 2nd in least HRs allowed.

Phillies (basically) fire Ruben Amaro. I'll confess it bugs me that Gillick found more nice things to say about Amaro than Schuerholz and Co. could find to say about Wren.

Yeah. Their pitching is top tier. They have the highest pitching WAR and their team 3.38 FIP is among the best in the game. Their actual team era is 2.81 which is a good .40 points lower than second place. I would say most of that has to do with their defense. And the team has the 5th most dWAR as a team. It might not be on the same level as the Royals but it is positively effecting their performance. They are currently built like a lot of the mid 90's Braves teams.

I'm not sure what this has to do with Heyward. But they generally have had good defenses too which is why I'm sure they targeted Heyward to begin with since he's a really good all around player.

The only reason their pitching is good because of Heyward, you're right.

Yadi and Heyward are elite-level defenders, aside from that, i wouldnt say the defense is all that ridiculous.

Yeah. I said Heyward is the reason the Cards pitchers are as good as they are. Braves had very good defenses with only two elite level defenders in Simmons and Heyward. And having two elite guys goes a long way.

Obviously it helps but it's not the end-all, be-all in why the Cards pitching has been so good this year.

I didn't say it was. But it's the main reason why they have the largest gap between era and fip. And for the Royals their defense is the main reason why they are in 1st place.
