Maybe I am in the minority here but I liked his answer. It was a stupid question. You would have to be really naive to think he hasnt had alcohol or cant get it if he wants it here in the US. If he were to be honest the media would have a field day with it. They would ask him and every team mate "So Bryce Harper has drank beer before, do you think this is a distraction?" 100 times a night until it actually became a distraction then they would blame him for causing the distraction. I hate the tactics media use to create stories where there isnt one.

I've met complete idiots who are Cardinals fans (Best fans in the sport... yeah, right), and on the other side, I've met respectful and knowledgeable Yankees fans. The world would be boring if ALL of us rooted for the Braves.

In a cab on my way to Long Island, when I was up in New York visiting relatives. I forget how we got on the topic of baseball, but my cabbie was obviously a Yankees fan. We started talking about how I was a Braves fan, and he had nothing but nice things to say (not too hard, I know, when we've not had much luck against the Yankees over the past decade or so). We even had a good laugh when he sarcastically thanked me for Mark Wohlers, both for him blowing it for us in 96, and him sucking in their bullpen later on. Still, he was totally objective, and good to talk baseball too.

To contrast, most Cardinals fans I've ever met are basically frat boys, or people from the Midwest who don't really watch much baseball. Yeah....

Every fanbase has those kind of fans. On both sides. I seriously one time heard a Yankees fan say things like Jeter is the best ever. Not ot mention how many bronys I personally know who are Yankees fans.

That's why you give them the standard generic answer and change the topic. Don't give the media or anyone else a reason to attack you. Because that's what they do now. They are vultures looking for a soundbite and they know Harper will give it to them.
 
I don't really mind his "six feet under" comment, I'm just tired of his whining about getting hitting on the ass and acting like a tough guy.

Well, that was kind of my original point. I don't mind talking to fans of other teams, as long as they're intelligent and capable of discussion that doesn't make my ears bleed.

And yeah, bronies are a scary lot.

This thread hasn't been updated in about two weeks... yet of those online about 8 'guests' had their last activity reading this thread... hmm, quite curious. :eusa_dance:
 
I'm not a guest or a troll, but what I am was someone who earned a living as a reporter for 30 years. A serious journalist would NEVER ask a Harper that kind of question, because he would already know he was a) a mormon and b) underage at any rate. During much of my time in the Braves locker room, it was the radio guys who were always angling for a sound bite they could use out of context. Now, though, blogs and social media and any number of people who "report" without oversight or editorial control/censorship are way too prevelant.

Harper gets a ridiculous amount of this kind of attention because he is one of the relatively few ballplayers who is covered as heavily by the "social" media as sports.

On a personal note, one reason I have avoiding doing anything other than reporting news from the minor leagues is that I am very reluctant to trust my own judgement 24/7 after years of proper checks and balances. I do believe in live and let live, but I would probably be more like PD than "Lockhart" in the exchange of ideas in a public forum.
