2016 Presidential Debates Thread [2-13-'16 GOP South Carolina]

Jeb posted a picture on twitter saying "My brother kept us safe!" while W was standing on the rubble from the 9-11 attack...errrr what?

And yeah, he kept us safe, besides that attack, and besides when he sent our troops to die in Afghanistan and Iraq.

it's ****ing absurd

It is. But it doesn't matter. Buzz words work on his support base. Just say "safety" and "freedom" and BAM! Suddenly you're doing something when you're actually not.

I hate to make cynics out of people, but none of us should kid ourselves. I think Trump and Kasich are probably the only people on the stage who are going by the seat of their pants. Israel, Planned Parenthood, and more nebulous saws like "security" and "middle class" are fueling a lot of the debate fodder and that fodder is being harvested right off of poll results. It's kind of what makes the whole enterprise maddening now. The level of political instinct in candidates/elected officials nowadays is probably at an all-time low. What really makes me laugh is that some polls try to help fashion an "authentic" message.

One can say what they want about Trump (most everyone does), but there's not a more instinctual person in the race on either side. He is tapping a frustration that is out there and has done so quite effectively. The problem is that those in his tribe may dissipate with a strong breeze.

Even if Trump is a novelty, people get excited about that sort of thing. Everyone wants to be a part of the phenomena even if it bears results that isn't best for them.

Agree. He is pretty much unscripted and at this juncture, a lot of folks find that refreshing. Everyone except Trump, Paul, and Kasich (and Scott Walker who is so fr*ckin' stupid that you can't dumb a script down enough for him) is presenting nuances of the same tightly-constrained for the base message.

I was at Disney World last week and just now got a chance to watch the debate. My grades and thoughts on the main debate:

Paul - B+ I thought he did a pretty solid job. Defended his positions well. Likely not enough to move up in the polls though.

Huckabee - C CNN didn't really want to talk to him much did they? He usually does a good job in debates, but he just didn't say enough.

Rubio - B He appeared knowledgeable, and he's likeable enough to be president. He needs to get a bit more comfortable up on the stage.

Cruz - A I personally thought he had the best debate. He differentiated himself from the other candidates based on a few of his positions. Needs to continue to work on his ability to relate to common rabble. He's my top choice right now.

Carson - D I just don't think he'll ever be good at debates. He's too reserved. He's an extremely likeable person, but just too quiet.

Trump - A His command of that stage is something I'm not sure we've seen in a debate since Bill Clinton. Of course he says some hilariously ridiculous things, but I'm not even sure it matters.

Bush - F Another poor performance. The weird five he gave to Trump at the end. He just gives off the appearance that he's trying too hard. He's that guy. Don't be that guy.

Walker - C He is just kind of there. Whenever he's asked a question I just want them to move on to the next person

Fiorina - A She had the line of the night. Otherwise her grade would be a B. She needs to develop a sense of humor. Can't be serious all the time and win an election. Voters don't want to vote for Sally Stern face. She and Cruz are kind of similar in that regard.

Kasich - B He's pretty solid, but he's not really differentiating himself from the crowd. It's possible he will later on. Don't want to peak too early.

Christie - A This guy is good at these things. He could be President. Probably the strongest stage presence outside of Trump. Has an aura of authority about him. He's put himself back in contention.

I thought CNN did a terrible job. Way too Trump centered.

Fiorina is the worst. Somehow many feel she "won" that **** show of a debate. Party feels like a total joke.

you're just trolling now, right?

No, I think Cruz did a great job. I like that he really just argued issues and made strong arguments and said how he would solve the issues. I also like that he is willing to try some out of the box tactics to get things done. He's got a fearless quality about him that I like. I don't really care if liberals think he's insane. Why should I care about that? They're voting for Hillary or Biden no matter what.

he sounded like he was running for prime minister of Israel in that debate

he is bat **** crazy

but cool

what is honestly the point of having so many "candidates" up on stage? Like do we really need Fiorina up there? She is a terrible candidate with no earthly shot of winning.

Why zero in on Fiorina? She's one of the few who can communicate complex ideas in an intelligent manner.

The phrase "no earthly shot of winning" means nothing in this environment. Candidates are promoting themselves as much as they are running for office. Savvy losers will parlay their popularity into a new gig.

You know that's not true. You're going with the talking points. You're going to vote for a candidate who is more of the same even though you are against it. I would argue that is insane.
