The Gospel According to one of the Johns

I saw that.. he had to be protected from the rule 5 while he rehabbed. So he basically used 2 options to stay protected from getting snatched by another team. like I said, it kind of stinks because he would greatly benefit AAA work as opposed to BP or spot starting next year...

Welp, it looks like they are going to blink. They've operated and removed the cancer but are going to now skip the chemo and radiation because the surgery hurt. Let's hope the sickness doesn't return.

the way I see the Bourn and Swisher trade is moving money owed from 17 to 2016. The Tribe sent 10 million to the Braves to take the 28 million owed to Bourn and Swisher. That basically washes the contracts.. But it is money spent.. you were going to spend 18 million regardless if you spend it all in 16 or break it up over two years. However, I think Hart is thinking that Bourn and Swisher are going to be a lot easier to move at the 2016 deadline than CJ would be able to move. So now you can flip Bourn and Swisher next July for prospects.. CJ might be able to be moved as a rental but it would have been 2017 and they didn't want CJ splitting time with anyone in 2017.. Bourn and Swisher will get playing time next year because, even though we should be better, it is still not the year we want to compete.. So an objective next year is to build enough value in Swisher and Bourn to move them at the deadline while also staying away from the 500 ABs auto renewal in each of their contracts.
I have the same take on that trade. Decent seasons from Bourn and Swisher would help us in the palatability department and help net us some prospects.

They don't really need to hit much better than Gomes. A contender will trade some low level prospect for a rental like those two.. the Braves will have paid most of their salary by July 31st. If one of them hits well .275ish/ 10Hrs (swisher) or Bourn (.285ish) 15 SBs, then we might get two low level prospects one with a higher ceiling.

I get that and agree, but boy have they looked like shadows of their former selves thus far. I think Chris Johnson is a total chucklehead in addition to being a below-average player, so there was probably some "save the clubhouse" angle in jettisoning him.

chuckle head is a very nice way to put it. not the words I would have used but I will go with it..

FWIW, my take on the accounting in the Indians trade . . .

- Money to be sent by Indians to Braves is "around $15 million". Reported by Anthony Castrovince (Indians beat writer), and subsequently reported by DOB and Bow. So, I think $15m is the best figure to use for our collective armchair GM activities. Could be slightly more or less than that in reality.

- My interpretation of events is that money would be paid after this season / before next season and thus would be applied to 2016 payroll. This would be the "normal" procedure as I understand it, and was the way the $ was to be paid for Arroyo according to AP.

- So for 2016, the Indians would be paying $22.5m ($15m + $7.5m) and the Braves would be paying $29m ($15m + $14m). Net difference of $6.5m.

- As far as the value of the 3 players changing sides, to me they're similar. Guys who belong on a 25-man roster as reserve players only. In other words, guys who would only make a couple million bucks as free agents. So I guess you could argue that the Braves close the gap further buy having two of those guys versus one, but that may be a bridge too far.

I knew that 10 million didn't sound right as I typed it. that was what was originally reported but later showed 15 million was coming to the Braves.

"- So for 2016, the Indians would be paying $22.5m ($15m + $7.5m) and the Braves would be paying $29m ($15m + $14m). Net difference of $6.5m."

to look at the total contracts would be
the Braves owe (15 mill + 14 Mill)-15 mill for a total of $14 million due in 2016
the Tribe owe $7.5 mill + $9 mill for a total of 16.5 million plus the 1 mill buyout for 2018 totaling 17.5 million Add the 15 million going to the Braves then CJ is costing the Tribe 32.5 million over 2 years.

I believe that what was reported by Castrovince is that the amount being paid to the Braves by the Indians was "closer" to $15M than the $10M that others had reported.

We’ve had a lot of success in getting them to sign their contracts, willingly.

The rest were forced to watch old clips of Kolb impersonating a pitcher and Reitsma getting blooped to death until they agreed to sign season ticket contracts.

The gospel according to another John (according to Timothy Peacock). A couple parts I found interesting below.

Hart was very non-committal on the catcher position. He stated that Christian Bethancourt‘s talent “hasn’t translated” to the major league level, and they may approach next season looking to platoon him once again. Hart stated that the Braves will approach A.J. Pierzynski about returning next season, but noted that he is a better fit in the American League at this point.
Hart views starting pitcher Mike Minor as “an anchor” in the rotation next year, along with Shelby Miller and Julio Teheran. He suggested the team may pursue a free agent starting pitcher.
Rebuilding and improving the bullpen is a top priority. Hart expects to accomplish this task primarily through free agency.
Hart expects another platoon in Left field next season. It is doubtful that the Braves will make a “splashy” free agent signing, although they may address LF with another trade, if the opportunity presents.
Reliever Shae Simmons should be “good to go” around May 1st, or possibly June 1st (Simmons had Tommy John Surgery on February 2, 2015).

Really hope we don't go with a LF platoon TBH. Really wish we'd "splash" on Heyward or Upton or Cespedes or even Fowler. We have no close prospects for lF or RF. Dustin Peterson is probably the closest.

I'm always surprised at how unfiltered Hart is when the media is around. I wonder what a proud guy like AJP will think if he reads that the Braves think he's a better fit for the AL.

True enough. Exact tweet below. Another potential clue is the overall ~$4m difference noted. When I plug in a result of exactly $4m, the cash being sent works out to around $14.5m.

A few of the newsier items from Hart in he TV booth tonight:

- Hart said we would be adding 2, 3, or 4 veteran relievers.
- When asked about Mallex, he said there's a chance he'll be able to contribute in 2016 but the projected arrival is more like 2017.
- Said they like their young pitchers, but will look at the SP market in free agency. Said they aren't likely to be players in the frontline SP market but will talk to some guys.

Won't hurt to kick the tires on Price and Cueto. I think we have an outside shot on Cueto. But more likely we sign someone like Leake or Latos.

Yeah, it sounds like they are gonna be aggressive this off season. They need folks in the seats next year to create the excitement for the new stadium and '17.

It would be quite the letdown if they built it but then no one came.

Comments on Minor are interesting. I know he was slated to throw off the mound a couple weeks ago. It must be going well. My guess for next year's rotation: Miller, Teheran, Minor, Wisler, Leake.
