Wren overruled by JS / McGuirk in previous requests to rebuild team?

This article is bunk. If JS was actually in charge during those years, then Roy Clark would have never left. Kurt Kemp would have never left. Tom Batista would have never left.
 
I don't buy the whole enchilada, but aspects of gondee's contention are logical and I think I've posted thoughts along that line in the past. I think Wren was under a tremendous amount of pressure to put a competitive team on the field with a static budget. What I find difficult to believe is that those above Wren would have advocated the draft/player development approach of mid-ceiling guys. But the erosion of draft spending on a couple of DeMacio's drafts show that the pursestrings were pretty tight until the new draft rules were implemented.

There's still no excuse in my book for the Uggla and Melvin Upton, Jr., deals, but those deals were approved up the line so for Wren to absorb all the blame for those decisions isn't quite fair.

The point of contention isn't that JS had complete autonomy, but that there were certain things that were disallowed.

Besides, was JS just completely asleep at the wheel when those guys left? From my understanding he was Wren's boss at the time.

I would think JS would have had a conversation with guys like Clark when they left to find out their reasons.

Which would mean that he let the pariah Wren hang around 5 year's past his due date. If indeed the reason he was fired was due to his poor people skills.
