Simmons dealt to Angels for two top pitchers, Aybar

you're imagining that value. the more he makes, "team friendly" or not, you're going to limit the number of teams that could go for him and certainly limit the return. the braves got a pretty big return for this guy. yes, they're in the form of prospects, but they just got a new number one prospect in their system in a guy who is pretty close to being major league ready.

they can then at some point turn that savings into somebody else to help the club down the road. in short, this is a hell of a return for a defensive specialist who probably has already physically peaked.

Yes if your goal is to trade him then the sooner you trade him the more value you should get. My point is that he shouldn't have been traded. He was here for 5 years at a very team friendly deal. He should have been one of the building blocks going forward. But since I guess the 2017 window is no longer there then there is no point in keeping him. Presumably Miller should be next if he we can't buy out 2-3 years of FA as he will get expensive by the time the Braves want to compete again.

I like the trade, don't love it, but I do like it.

A couple things to consider...

1) As fans we ALWAYS overrate our own.... its just the nature of things... its why a lot of LAA fans are upset today too. They think they just traded a 'future ace for a shortstop that can't hit'.

2) As much as we complain about our lack of offense.... isn't Simmons part of that problem? Granted his defensive value, particularly at SS, is enormous, but unless he improves with the stick he's a drag on the offense.

3) If you don't think his offense improves, and clearly the FO doesn't think it will. Then THIS is the time to trade him. He's going to get nothing but more expensive and if his offense doesn't improve he's not going to be as enticing to clubs. As friendly as his contract is right now, those last three years are awfully expensive for a defensive guy who doesn't hit. Now, if his offense improves then the trade busts, but the FO clearly doesn't think it will.

4) The return is pretty solid, you get an elite pitching prospect, a good pitching prospect and a very solid ML SS -- who will fill in immediately and who we can flip for more assets down the road.

Frankly when it comes to trading for minor leaguers; I don't care if its pitchers or hitters -- its all about collecting assets.

No it wasn't.

I agree. The immediate future was somewhat bright heading into 2015 on offense, but our rotation was looking like Teheran, Wood, and.... no one else with major league experience. Without spending a boat load of money, we'd be in a worse situation now if we hadn't traded Heyward and J-Up. And we'd still have finished under .500 once again.

And our chances of having Heyward and/or Good Upton going forward would be about the same as they are now...zero or damned close to it.

yeah, i bet miller is next if he's not extended.

i'm convinced the club sees the current 18 year olds as the next core group so 2020 probably is the real target. ****.

Then how do we score runs in magical 2017? We won't trade for bats and we won't spend on bats.

Simple with Fredi at the helm. Get the pitcher on, and bunt bunt bunt! Hopefully a wild pitch thrown in there somewhere, and there you go 1-0....Game over, Braves win, Braves win, Braves win....goodnight all see you at the ballpark tomorrow, where ace #25 takes the mound.

That's what it looks like. I wonder if anything changed between the Olivera trade and this one.

Braves go 162-0 and score a total of 162 runs on the season

... I had a friend text me this morning "why the hell did we trade for Olivera again?"

Pisses me off everytime I think about it.

At least Newcomb can fill the void left by Wood hopefully

It doesn't make sense in light of the obvious reality the FO is working under now.

I am still not against trading Wood and Peraza, but Olivera doesn't match the timeframe. That trade can only be justified by trading Olivera. And that has nothing to do with him as a player because I actually am very optimistic about his ability.

BREAKING NEWS: Braves intend to take pitcher Ricky Roengardner, a RHP in middle school, with their first pick in the 2016 draft....

Coppy quoted: "We need talent, and we feel that Roengardner can develop in to a ToR starter or bullpen piece."

more to come...

If we did decide to trade Aybar and go with someone else at SS in 16, what could we realistically expect to get for him?

Tough to tell.....he is a 1 year rental...i would image a little more than what we gave up/got for uribe/johnson last year. Maybe a bullpen arm, and a C rated prospect.....or maybe 2 B prospects

I think it's telling that financially our team is in trouble compared to the rest of the league.

We can't afford big contracts now and will have to reinvent ourselves every few years.

They'll keep Freddie just because. We should trade Freddie to get value out of him.

Still saddens me we were the youngest team in baseball in 2013 with a 96 win season... now 2 years later we imploded that core. The Heyward-Freeman-Simmons-Kimbrel-Medlen-Minor foundation is all but gone now. Might as well get whatever you can out of Freddie too. He's gonna be more expensive than Simmons was going to be.

So you know for a fact that we have no intention of trading or signing any bats before 2017? Cool story

Probably going more on what the FO has shown so far...we still have a long way to go in this offseason, next season, and next offseason. However, I think it does say something about the market when we were shopping Simmons that there were no offers including offense.

If getting offense is going to be as difficult as it seems to be right now, we are in trouble.

Money was behind the new stadium as well, this has been bothering me too. Liberty isn't loosening the purse, and we have to find other avenues of cash.

Actually we have an insane amount of pitching to trade now and it's a long time before 2017
