Except for the snark about Olivera, a really good list that does what you say -- allow us to judge for ourselves. On balance, I got to say it still looks pretty promsing.

thanks.. as you get to know me, you will realize my snark is not a representation of how I feel, but more of the mood of the day. I created this after the CJ trade, so luckily I didn't do too much work on it..

I think in a vacuum, each trade was at least somewhat defensible (except for the horrid Olivera deal)

But in aggregate, I have no clue what is going on

The Paroubeck/Dirks trade is the one I can't defense. I know we didn't want to go over our Intl money.. but why two promising young players for $250 K.. That one almost seemed like a desperate move. Especially since Paroubeck was a 3B with power/speed potential.. This happened on Jul 2, so I can't think they knew they would be getting HO to play 3B.. Heck this might have even set the dominos in place to allow the Dodgers to be ok with trading HO..

***never mind.. I for some reason thought he was a 3Bman.. Still can't defense this one..**********

Paroubeck never even played for us, right?

I didn't like it either. But it sounded to me like we already had a plan to sign this stud in the next class. To stay out of the penalties this year-so we could sign the guy next year-we had to get enough bonus money to make the market work. I guess we'll see if those guys we traded provide more value than the guys we signed.

One very good trade, one that is looking quite bad and a bunch of comme ci, comme ça.

It probably seemed desperate because it was desperate. We over-signed in IFA and probably had some deals lined up that didn't pan out. With how the international market works, going back on a verbal agreement just isn't a viable option to stay under your budget, so taking a less than ideal trade is what would be left.

Great deals:
Touki - Gosselin

Sanchez - Kubitza

Even deals:
Newcomb/Ellis - Simmons

Vizcaino - La Stella

Bad deal:
Olivera/Bird/pick - Wood/Peraza

The rest - don't really matter

I don't think the CK deal can be a great deal anymore. We owed BJ 3 years. Last year we suck. This year we suck and we have 15 million in money we probably won't spend.
The Pads got a nice package for CK.

I'd rather get the bigger return for CK and keep BJ since we are not doing anything with the savings.

I disagree with TLS being "at best" a utility player. To me he's a role player. He's not a star 2B, but on certain teams who either are devoid of groundball pitchers or have a great defensive SS his defense isn't a big liability. Offensively he'll never be great because of his power, but he doesn't strike out much, and he walks well. He should be valuable to a team, especially a team with a speedster he can hit behind because I can see him as a guy who can move runners well. It's a small sample, but he's shown the ability to hit the ball to all fields, though I think with his power his value would be as a slap hitter. But I can see that as a weapon for a team because if the fast runner is going to 2B with a lefty up the SS covers 2B meaning TLS would have a huge hole to poke the ball through and turn a potential SB into a 1st to 3rd or into a run potentially (would require some terrible OF positioning though)

Unfortunately for him he's on a team with Starlin Castro, Addison Russell, and their (BA) top prospect is a SS as well, with that many SS he's not gonna find the field. Plus Kris Bryant is at 3B so they can slide to 2B or the OF. With Soler and Schwarber likely cornering the OF I just can't see him playing much. He basically has to prove that he's a better player than Castro, which I don't think is easy at all. Castro has been overrated most of his career (how many other 3 time all-stars average 2.2 rWAR per season and are 25 or younger)

I wouldn't fully disagree with you, but the return they got from Boston doesn't change the return they gave us. We got Wisler and Riley in the deal, which is huge by itself and a really good return for Kimbrel. And we've already been able to use the BJ savings in other ways; for example, we likely wouldn't have been able to pull off the Touki deal with BJ's contract on the books. So you can certainly argue that deal allowed us to get Riley, Touki, and Wisler. That's a huge return.

yeah.. pretty bone headed.. I even left it up for you guys to mock.. however, I still didn't like selling Jordan for 250 K.. much less adding Caleb in the deal..

Paroubeck has saw raw ability, but he's also 21 and yet to see A ball. I get that there have been injury issues there, but that's not usually a combination that ends up being something. We obviously didn't believe in him all that much.

The Olivera trade was and is a travesty in every way.

I wouldn't say it is a travesty. We have to see how he shakes out. He could be a heck of a player. People raved about his offensive potential. That being said, I still am in the camp that thinks it could go down as one of the worst trades the Braves have ever made. I'm all for trading Alex Wood for young potential players, not him and Peraza for old potential player.

Kimbrel deal was fine especially since it got Riley in the draft who was really good last year.

Money wise, we'll see what they use the BJ savings on.

I think it's important to consider the draft pick when looking at the Kimbrel deal, but, speaking as someone who thought it was a great move at the time, I think one has to consider it in context now.

The net result of that deal was to give a salary relief for three seasons. Those seasons are going to end up to be lost years, in all likelihood. If Riley turns into a stud or if Wisler hits the big time it might look different, but right now I think it would be fair to knock it down a notch from a no-brainer to a "wait-and-see."

The draft pick is an important thing to consider in other deals too. Heyward and Upton will bring the Cards and Pads a draft pick if they sign elsewhere in addition to the season they gave them last year.
