Around Baseball Offseason Thread

If we trade both I want us to be blown over. Not like Coppy saying we got too much talent to pass up in the Simmons deal. Like the Simmons deal plus a high ceiling position prospect who is in AA or higher. Maybe More.

And if we do that then we have to go out and get a guy like Doug Fister for a 3 yr deal or so, right?

Hence the saying 'an offer we couldn't refuse'

I did not know that, but I will take your word for it. I would bet they use a WAR stat that is weighted differently than what we see.

That may be. But I don't think it's a coincidence that Jordan got around 7 million per WAR just like players last year got around 6-7 million per WAR to a certain point. It's been a pretty standard practice for several years now with the cost rising slightly every offseason. Whatever the base $$/WAR is in a given year will be the same for most players in the 1-3.5ish range. Once you get close to 4 WAR and higher the $$/WAR starts to drop.

#RedSox in agreement with David Price. 7 years and $217 million. Story on @BGlobeSports: bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/12…

Wow is right...I can see why the team is stocking up on pitchers. They are just hoping one can become an ace for a few years so they don't have to pay $31 million a year for one. Say what you will about hitting being the hotter commodity because this would indicate otherwise.

If there were a hitter of Price's caliber... he would get something similar, if not more.

I think Heyward gets $30M

Price is a proven al east winner. There will be dissenters tho. One competing gm just said, "they're outta their... minds."

Price is good but isnt good in the playoffs.

Hawk told me he wouldnt get more than Scherzer.

Salaries are way out of control. Baseball really does need a salary cap. But 31 per for Price is way to much for someone who chokes in the postseason and has been dropping velocity like crazy.

One way to look at David Price deal: #Brewers owner Mark Attanasio paid only $6 million more for entire franchse.

If I had to choose between spending $200M on an elite pitcher vs $200M on an equally elite hitter, I would pay the hitter without question. While both contracts would certainly be risky, the pitcher is more likely to suffer a career ending injury than the hitter.

One thing I will say about the Braves rebuilding plan, regardless of how well they execute that plan: they are attempting to grow pitchers and buying hitters, which is the correct way to manage player risk.
