Also the Red Sox might trade one or two of Rodriguez, Miley, Porcello, Buchholz, Kelly and Owens now that they have signed Price. It still looks to me like there is a surplus of available starting pitching this off-season that will benefit teams willing to be patient.

Miller might be better than those other pitchers, but the availability of decent alternatives makes it less likely that some team will overpay for him. The Braves are going to find out that all these arms are not going to be easy to convert into bats. I would have thought the Olivera trade would have opened their eyes to that reality.

Maybe. Pretty tough not to be awfully excited about the potential return he could fetch right now though. Am I the only one that wonders about where all those that complained about how bad the return for Heyward was have been recently? With the news of the Price signing and Greinke decision looming between two teams pretty soon, Miller's arguably the hottest name (including Heyward) in baseball circles tonight.

Best case scenario is the Braves trade Miller to a team that's in panic mode, and then waits to sign a bargain FA
 
Best case scenario is if Grienke signs with SF and LA and Cueto signs with AZ. At that point the Braves will have strong leverage with Chicago and LAD who both are in the market for frontline pitchers.

It all depends on the team. But I would much rather pay a 3 WAR pitcher ~20 million a year then unload a bunch of prospects for Miller that the Braves are likely asking for. But then again the Braves did just package a 2.5 WAR pitcher with a top 50 prospect for Hector Olivera so some teams may think they can fleece the Braves.

I know how everyone hates to think about it, but if they played on Heyward (which I still think they very well might) and actually could get another pretty inexpensive Pitcher for Gardner, could you walk away from Miller for Judge and Sanchez right now? Everyone still has questions about Sanchez' defense, and they've got Mac's all but untradeable contract. Could you say no to it even if you only got Castro for Gardner?

Just saw on MLBTR that the Braves asked for Pollock and Blair for Miller and Viz, but the DBacks turned it down.

Pollock is good, but why trade 3 years of Miller for 3 years of Pollock?

Maybe try to extend Pollock? He would be a 30+ FA though.

Just my opinion, but the trade makes plenty of sense for Atlanta. You trade for Pollock, extend him under the guise that you will have increased payroll in 2017, and you have your pitcher fountain pump out Miller's replacement.

And when looking at the grand scheme of things I figure that would make several fans upset. If you extended Pollock he would cost 20+ during his FA years. So you would essentially trade Heyward for Miller and then trade Miller for Pollock while giving him the 20+ million it would of took to sign Heyward.

Are we choosing to ignore the year of Shelby and three years of cheap Pollock? That undoubtedly factors into the equation.

Besides, Pollock is arguably a better player than Heyward and they are about the same age.

Yup. They're reportedly trying to move Nova, but that would give them pretty good depth and a pretty solid (and amazingly for them) inexpensive rotation while they wait for C. C., Tex, and Beltran to come off the books following next season.

With that kind of cash available, they could spend whatever it takes to sign Bautista or Carlos Gomez next winter to replace Beltran, plug Bird in at 1B to replace Tex, and still have payroll come down significantly.

Does it really matter if the team is going to suck regardless? Pollock is good and an argument could be made that he is better than Heyward although Heyward is almost 2 years younger. With that being said I don't think there is anyway we could get Pollock for Miller without adding more into it.

Context matters, I agree. But we could suck just as easily with Heyward. I think there is value in having as many good players under below market contracts regardless of outcome.

We won't get Pollock for just Miller (we probably can't get him in general). But we also didn't just get Miller for Heyward. Jenkins is a pretty good prospect too.
