Miller market 'hot'

I thinking more and more that he deadline is the better place to deal miller.

Ppl are balking at the price. WAit for injury and title dreams to move up price

Plus we could use miller for half a year and that gives time for sims newcome Jenkins etc to be ready

I agree, wait for someone to get desperate at the trade deadline. Deadline trades are usually players close to free agency and there are few good ones this next year so the trade deadline should be a sellers market.

OK, the reports that caused me to start a new thread about a trade to the Cubs turned out to be bogus. Here is a new tweet from Joel Sherman:

Risky. What if it is Miller that gets hurt, a la Grilli? What if Miller regresses to 2014 form?

If he becomes an ACE, then you can't trade him. But that would be ok right? Not really since he is one of the few commodities that can bring the Braves bats back and NOT moving him doesn't fit with the strategy of bringing back so many arms up to this point. If he does become an ACE in the first part of 2016, chances are the Braves end up keeping him for 2.5 more years and losing him as a $30M per year FA just when the rest of the team begins to catch up and be good.

Alright, here's a potential deal I actually think is feasible. We know the Red Sox are trying to win now, as always, and Boegarts and Pedroia aren't going anywhere. Ramirez and Sandoval are also under contract for several years, so they won't have a lot of room in the IF anytime soon. And with Bradley's play last year, they have to feel pretty good about Castillo, Bradley, and Betts in the OF. What they still desperately need is pitching. Porcello is garbage and Buchholz is iffy. Eduardo Rodriguez looked good last year but Owens struggled, and they need some young, talented blood in that pool to compete.

So my proposed deal would be: Miller, Sims, and Ruiz for Devers and Benintendi. We know Wren drafted Sims, and while I would hate to trade him right now, I'd be willing to since he's gotten some of his value back. Ruiz isn't a great piece but at least gives them a guy to replace Devers who has a chance to have a bounce-back year and be a good long-term option there still. And obviously Miller is the big piece. And it gets us two guys that won't be ready for another couple years but fill huge positions of need for our future. And we would still have a large collection of arms who are either ready now or will be soon (Teheran, Wisler, Newcomb, Jenkins, Banuelos, Folty, Gant, Ellis).

I would love that deal and I think the Red Sox would be tempted to pull the trigger. Miller would give them a good #2 behind Price for the next few years, and Sims will be ready to compete for a spot in the rotation soon. Their offense should be good, and a rotation of Price/Miller/Buchholz/Rodriguez/Porcello with Owens and Sims as guys knocking on the door would suddenly be halfway decent.

personally think that is too step of an overpay for prospects that are three+ years away.

Sims' stock is definitely up, but that deal would probably get you Benintendi and someone else, but not Devers.

Rio is not insurance for Devers. Rio is a guy who might stick in the bigs. Devers is young and has uncertainty attached, but he's thought of by many as a 30 HR guy with a hit tool, as well.

Haha, so one guy thinks you're overpaying and one thinks you're overvaluing our talent. That probably means you're onto something. ;-)

Precisely. And we know the Red Sox are willing to overpay in prospects for current major league assets.

I know Ruiz is not a replacement for Devers, it's a clear step down; I just mean that it at least gives them a piece with real talent there. And I think you're overvaluing Benintendi a little. It may be true the Red Sox value him like you do, which is all that matters, but I've seen a 55 FV given to him, which is good but not great. I like his potential, but he's not a sure thing. Devers would clearly be the big piece in the deal. You're right that it might take more, but I'd throw in another pitching prospect (someone closer like Gant or someone further away like Sanchez) if we had to.

As for Matt, if you think that's an overpay on our end, I think you're going to be disappointed with any return we get. Either that, or you just aren't that familiar with the Red Sox prospects.

Devers is on the Albies track, so there's a good chance he's more like 1.5-2 years away, not 3. And Benintendi could fly through the minors this year. He could literally be up in the majors at just about any point, depending on how well he performs this year. I'm not saying he could be up by the end of this year, but starting next year, he'll probably be knocking on the door.

I'm loathe to cough Sims up.

I agree, but his value is back up, and we know Wren loves him, so you won't get better value for him anywhere else. I would love to keep him, but if you want to get real hitting talent, you have to give up something real in return.

Sims and Ruiz both had good endings to their season, but would be graded on their season as a whole. I don't think it would be the right time to trade either of those guys.

I also think it's an overpay.

I think we have to get at least one long term position piece that can play this year. They can start in minors but not multiple years away.

Sims plus miller is too much IMO. We will likely need sims so fill in for miller.

As good as those guys look a lot can happen in several years. I know everyone love Riley but he's a long way away. Remember marte.

Sure, but you have to take chances to get premier hitting talent.

You're talking about a good, cheap #2 SP and 2 non-top 100 prospects for a top-20 prospect and another prospect who is at least top 60-70. That's a reasonable deal in terms of pure value.

While I would love to trade all of our assets at peak value, it's not realistic that can happen. We can't limit ourselves to trading only those guys who had great years. And again, if any team is going to give us more for Sims than his current value might suggest, it would be Boston. If they really like Miller and Sims, regardless of what they claim their current value should be, we can pull more from them.

I'm trying to come up with reasonable deals. I would love to trade Miller and Jenkins for Devers, Benintendi, and Bradley, but that does nothing except set fans' expectations too high.
