Is it something sexual?

this makes zero since for the Tribe to do this. They traded 29 million owed next year for 19 million for the next two years (including buyout) plus sent 15 million.. just to cut bait.. so now they just cut 34 million for nothing..

But what do you do with him (or the Braves with Swisher and Bourn)? Terrible player who really adds nothing to a roster. I get the money issues (again, Braves are having the same challenge on Swisher and Bourn), but all the principals in trade who don't appear to have much in the tank anymore. No other team in baseball is taking on any of these contracts at their full value unless they are dumping a similar contract.

All I can think is that the Indians made the trade so they could clear roster spots while saving face. It's very difficult for a GM to bring himself to cut a player he signed to a big contract. However, trading for another bad contract then cutting that player is, for some reason, easier.

The other thing the Tribe gets is more flexibility now. The Braves are paying more upfront but less in the long run. The Tribe gets a little more immediate flexibility at the cost of a larger expense over the long term.

I understand that, but from a logical standpoint, they ate ~4.5 million more by making this trade and then dumping him.. it is harder for the Tribe as they want to contend, so black holes in their 25 roster hurt them more than the Braves.. I just wonder what the thinking was when they said lets do this trade and we will send you 15 million to even the money out but not really because now we owe 4.5 million more.. did they think they could fix Chris.. flip him.. just wonder what they thought and funny how quickly they gave up.
He raked when he first went over there.. then became spider man and I don't think hit very well after that..He finished with a .289/.312 avg/opb.. 27% K rate however.. I also wonder if there was attitude issues they didn't want to deal with..

I just thought it ranked as a goofy trade for both sides with the goofiness balance landing heavier on the Indians' side of the ledger. From what I have observed, Johnson doesn't seem to be what I'd call a great clubhouse presence (but I honestly don't know that).

I don't know who was responsible for the Braves extending Johnson (great double entendre). It falls in Wren's lap most of the time, but given what we've read/heard in the past six months, we don't know if there was pressure to keep Johnson. Whoever is to blame, it was the worst decision made the Braves during the Wren era. I would argue it's an even bigger mistake that the Melvin Upton, Jr., contract because Johnson is simply a bad baseball player.

100% most indefensible move of Wren. I'd put it on Wren. But not sure how we're suppossed to absolve Schurholtz. Not exactly sure what JS' job is or how to spell his name, but I would think if that contract comes across his desk he should get to veto.

JS and Bobby should hold some level of accountability for the Wren era.. they were apart of decision making. I can't see Wren going to JS and saying we HAVE extended CJ.. just thought you should know.. also, don't see Wren saying we are signing BJ without Cox having input on scouting.. Bobby wasn't with the team this last year from what I read and I think most of the trades and moves have been positive.. I know he is coming back for 2 more years.. but hopefully it is just as golf cart driver.. I think baseball has passed him by now and he needs to let the new blood make decisions..

Bobby is just around to protect Fredi....

They should both get hit with the Wren era. JS was his boss if he could fire him. So he has to be responsible IMO.

Depends on the money/years but solid move, still think they need a bat.

@Ken_Rosenthal
Source: #STLCards in agreement with Leake, pending a physical.

Chris Cotillo @ChrisCotillo

Source confirms: Leake to Cardinals done, pending physical. Expectation is that it'll be 5 years, $75M w/ $18M option for '21.

This is also why i wouldnt give away Julio, the most he'll make is 12-13 mil in 2020.

FA SP is costly.

Why getting all this cheap pitching is big if it pans out.

I like Leake a lot, so good for the Cards. But, they do need a bat or two, plus some BP guys IMO.

The Cubs got way better and the Pirates are going anywhere right now.

It sounds like they're ok with what they have at 1B/OF but also really risky.

Leaks is an average pitcher, and he's now making $16 million/year. Looks like stockpiling a bunch of young pitching may not have been a bad move.

It also makes people screaming about Markakis' contract look crazy. This is the new FA market. Again, $10 million gets you a player who is better than bad, and $20 million gets you a good player.

Grichuk and Piscotty could take the next step. I just don't trust Holliday to stay healthy or remain that productive. Adams could rebound and they will have Moss for the whole year. Plus, they did add Brayan Pena.

He lends a lot of weight to that lineup.
