Baseball Prospectus Releases Top 101 Prospects

Surprised Touki didn't make it... Not surprised Fried didn't make it but he could easily jump right back in. Where is Olivera!!@!!?

Seems like BP's list is always quite a bit different than the others - based much more on pure ceiling than floor. IIRC, they were ahead of the others on Albies last winter.
 
When I think elite I think multiple all star appearances type of player. Swanson and Albies definately fit that bill imo. Pitchers are harder to predict but if Newcomb finds just a little more control then he is a top of the rotation starter.

I think Newcomb might end up being the best guy we've acquired this offseason (and that's saying something, considering I'm very high on all the guys we got in the Dbacks trade). His walk issues are very scary in the stat line, but I've watched a good number of his starts from MiLB.tv and I'm not super worried. The main control issues I noticed were 1) sometimes his arm slot would drift from a slightly lower than 3/4 release to a much more vertical point. This is an issue of mechanical practice and I'm fairly sure that the Braves system can correct something like that; and 2) he'd drag his arm through his changeup at times, screwing with his release point. If you can, go watch his start against Julio Urias and the Tulsa Drillers in August; it was a beauty.

Eh, it's been a just over a year since we started this rebuild, and most of the top end guys we received have barely played above A ball. I would be willing to bet that by this time next year, Albies, Swanson, and Newcombe will all be top 10-15 range, providing they keep progressing and don't have any set backs.

Plus #3 pick in the draft and wouldn't be surprised to see Lucas Herbert and Mike Soroka make a move.
 
I fully expect Maitan and whichever pitcher the Braves draft at #3 (hopefully Groome) to be top 100 guys next year.

we are also in on the Gutierrez kid.. he is a big time catching prospect. Again.. these guys are so young, but depending on what grade the Scouts give them, they could break the top 100 when they enter the minor league system.

Not to hijack the thread (I'm just really looking forward to the 2016 draft), but who is everyone eyeing/hoping for the Braves to grab at #3? I originally had my eyes on Rutherford (strictly because he's a bat).

Here's a link to fangraphs ratings for the upcoming draft. Looking back on 2015's draft, the top 3 picks are all in the Top 40 of BP's list that they just released. Can we expect our #3 pick to be placed in the same bucket (or was 2015 a deeper/stronger class)?
 
After looking a bit more in-depth at the list, it really doesn't make much sense to me. Just from looking at the rankings, it seems very upside-oriented and kind of downplays risk. That’s completely fine as a basis for a list. But there’s so many inconsistencies and the little blurbs just aren’t enough for me to trust the method. Newcomb should be higher on an upside list, potentially higher than Swanson. Hunter Harvey above Dillon Tate? What? Manuel Margot at 14 because of defensive upside, but Albert Almora all the way down at 83 when they have similar offensive profiles, but Almora is better both offensively and defensively. That makes no sense. Grant Holmes at 40 with very little projection left in him? I just really don’t understand the methodology of ranking here; it doesn’t flow consistently. So while it’s nice and allows for conversation, I put very little stock in it.

It seems the Phils will take Puk, and who knows who the Reds take. I personally hope Groome is there at #3 for the Braves. Hansen would be good, but Pint seems too slender to hold up to a 200 IP workload, imo.

The elite talent is clearly on the mound, and none of the positional talent seems to be worth it at #3.
