I don't think Jenkins is a realistic long-term rotation option right now. I would classify our guys like this:

Established starter, may not be here much longer:
Julio Teheran

Potential TOR starters, firmly in long-term plans, depends on development:
Sean Newcomb
Lucas Sims
Kolby Allard
Touki Toussaint
Max Fried
Mike Soroka?

Potential MOR starters, in long-term plans:
Matt Wisler
Aaron Blair
Ricardo Sanchez

Probably relief options long-term, unless they bust out:
Manny Banuelos
Tyrell Jenkins
Mike Foltynewicz
Zachary Bird

Trade bait:
John Gant
Chris Ellis

Obviously some of this will change, and we'll likely end up trading more than just Gant and Ellis, but this is kind of how I picture things as of now.
 
I honestly thought Jenkins was profiling higher than that. Why relief, and not MOR? (I haven't followed him that closely, alas.)

I just think this is the most likely spot for him considering his difficulties in getting swings-and-misses from minor leaguers and given the kind of pitching depth we have. It's just a guess on my part, but I think we would look to trade him if someone was willing to value him like even a MOR starter.

touki sure gets a lot of love for a guy who has never really gotten anybody out in the pros and doesn't seem to strike a ton of guys out along the way. he sure must have some kind of electric stuff for all of these rankings without the results.

His fastball/curve combo is top shelf. He's really, really raw but if he learns how to pitch, watch out. You can teach a guy how to pitch more easily than you can teach stuff.
 
Jenkins is not trending anywhere near becoming a reliever. He led his league in complete games this season (three, I think), even though his innings were being monitored. He is a guy who can likely evolve into an innings eater, I think.

I think we see Folty's future is the bullpen nowadays. And that's not a bad thing.
 
Yeah Jenkins will be given every opportunity to compete for a starting job. I'm still really high on him.
 
If nothing changes, Jenkins profiles as an innings eating ground ball pitcher. His pitches have excellent life on them and are hard to square up. He still walks too many guys for a pitcher with his K numbers but considering he was coming back off an arm injury, command issues are to be expected. If he can stay healthy, cut down his BB rate, and continue to keep the ball in the park like he's done, there's no reason he shouldn't be able to become a steady middle of the rotation starter.

That being said, his stuff is good enough that he does have some ceiling. His fastball-curve combo is good enough to get more swings and misses than he does. If he can tune his use and hone his command of those pitches, he could jump his K rate a batter or two every 9 and maybe become a number 2 starter.

As for Folty, I hope they give him every chance to be a starter. He's an absolute horse on the mound being able to hit the high 90's late into a game. When he's got his breaking stuff working he's overpowering. He's also shown a promising sinker. If he can get either the slider or curve to work consistently and refine his sinker he'll be a very valuable starter. If he actually gets his changeup working, the sky's the limit. He's got the stuff you can't teach and I don't want to quit on him as a starter just because he'll become a dominant reliever more easily. Let the pen be a fail safe for him. I don't want to miss out on a top of the rotation starter because we didn't have the patience to let him put it all together.

He does. Everyone acknowledges the risk inherent with him, but his ceiling is through the roof.
