2016 Presidential Primaries [ SUPER TUESDAY | 3-1-'16]

I'm traveling now and will get to all the posts to me over the weekend but...

I'm sincerely worried about young Democrats. I listened to them ask Hillary questions and they all were completely paralyzed without a promise that government would fix their very specific problems. It's as if none of them have any intention of doing anything for themselves at any point. Who will pay for my school, who will pay for my health insurance, who will guarantee me a home loan, who will make my employer give me $15 an hour, and on and on.

I hope they realize these politicians can't actually do any of these things for them.

Once again, I think it monumental we are even having these conversations at the national level

Well, you did call him a "friend of Satan" in a thread you started back in September. I'm not a religious man, but that would seem to be a pretty hostile. Not sure what you want me to find. It's not easy since the search bar doesn't pick up anything posted in meme form.

Satan's press secretary will neither confirm nor deny.

You people seem deluded. You don't think someone's a Christian because you know what's in their heart? And this other guy knows what Trump is thinking. I'm all for deciding whom to vote for based on what someone says or their actions. But you are no better than the people voting for someone just because of their sex, or the color of their skin. Or not voting for someone because of the shape of their hair. That's just silly. And for the figurehead of Catholic Christianity to publicly state that someone is not Christian because they have a different political or social or cultural belief is just embarrassing. He just alienated hundreds of thousands of Americans with his sentiment. By condemning Trump he's condemning all of us imperfect people. ANd I'm sorry but its not by works but faith through grace. i"m done ranting. I think.

I'm a liberal who doesn't agree with Trump on much and the Pope can say what he wants, but I was, while not terribly offended, really disappointed that Francis weighed in on this. The church should stay out of secular politics and instead work on the hearts, minds, and spirits of those in the pews and then hope that translates to a robust and respectful discussion of public policy in the world.

Anybody got any SC predictions? I'll go:

Trump 26
Cruz 24
Rubio 22
Bush 11
Kasich 9
Carson 7
1% dropouts and write-ins

Cruz and Rubio could flip, and either could pull a statistical tie with Trump. Trump likely won't crack 30, as undecideds will mostly break for the senators. Carson will drop out and back Rubio.

I think Trump will crack 30 (but barely). All eyes on the Bush camp after today. He doesn't finish in the top three and it's probably curtains and his mother will have to find something else to be defensive about. Egads, what an embarrassing thing that a candidate brings in his aging mother to campaign.

So Trump wins, but not by the 20 percentage points PPP has him at. Cruz is likely a strong second.

SEIU is working hard for Sanders in Nevada (and they are really well organized nationally in this election cycle), so it won't be surprising if he wins there.

What's SC's overall "religious-osity" rating? I know Iowa's was supposed to be pretty high, I figure SC's is too because it's in the South. Shouldn't much of Cruz's support come from those who rank morals pretty high whereas Trump's support should come more from those who rank the economy as most important? Oh and will SC's geographic proximity to Florida help Rubio, since he can't really steal that much of Trump's thunder on the economy or Cruz's thunder from the moral voting block?

And what would Hillary's camp think if Bernie somehow won in SC? I'll bet her response would be picked up on the Doppler down there. Probably won't happen but it does go along with my theme of "Anybody but Cruz or Hillary".

From what I've read, SC's religio-meter is similar to Iowa's, but the big difference is SC is a primary state and not a caucus state. That should allow unaligned Trump supporters an unimpeded chance to voice their support.

I am bewildered by the Jeb's decision to bring his aged mother on the campaign trail. Played right into Trump's caricature of him. In the past, I've been swayed by his campaign's putative strength in the later voting states, but right now it looks like he might not get there.

Beyond that, Rubio has the most to lose/gain, IMO. He seems to be the guy that insiders want to be the anti-Trump, but if he can't differentiate himself from Cruz in SC with the help of Haley, Tim Scott, and Gowdy, I'm not sure what that says about his chances to break out.

On a scale of 1-10, it's about a 14.

Or, if you prefer: on a scale of Rafael Belliard to Gerald Laird, it's Mark Bowman.

Wouldn't this tend to help Cruz more than Trump? Now you guys know I don't think Cruz cares about religion at all (on a candidate level, I do not claim to know what he thinks about it on a personal level). I think it's a means to an end for him, period, but still when Americans who care about the religious stances of their politicians tag you as being "a man of faith" you can't really convince them otherwise. I would think this would help Cruz in SC though I hope not.

Can't overlook the military presence in SC. That carries some weight

To this point in the race, Trump has been doing well with the evangelical bloc nationally, but things can change in the voting booth, especially after an onslaught of negative ads (and I believe Trump is probably the world record holder in the size of the lode than can be mined for negative ads to be used against him). I frankly don't think either Trump or Cruz believes much of anything other than their own self-anointed brilliance (but that charge can be levelled against most everyone in the race on both sides, it's just the outlandish matter of degree that is in play for these two).

But to your point, I think a lot of Carson voters are still trying to find a new home. Cruz may have screwed the pooch with his shenanigans vis-a-vis Carson in Iowa, because that will likely turn off hard core Carson supporters and make it difficult to gain their support going forward. That said, Cruz is on the move somewhat and we'll see if Trump can stave off his progress.

Still and all, it probably doesn't matter to Trump. I'm still convinced he'll go third party if he fades dramatically.
