Minor League Rosters

So Mississippi has unveiled their Opening Day roster. The big surprise? Albies is there, with Swanson in Carolina. Also that Allard is not in Rome to start, may just stick in extended ST for a while. And Ruiz shockingly is starting in Gwinnett. They must have liked what they saw from him in ST.

Other players of note starting in Mississippi - Newcomb, Sims, Ellis, Cabrera, Hursh, Thurman; Camargo, Dustin Peterson

Players of note in Carolina - Swanson, Davidson, Bird, Povse; probably our least interesting team to start

Rome - Fried, Toussaint, Soroka, Sanchez; Riley, Herbert, Acuna, Ellison, Morales

Gwinnett - Blair, Folty, Jenkins; Ruiz, M Smith

The rotations in Rome, Mississippi, and Gwinnett are going to be fun to watch just about every day, as well. And Rome as a whole has as much talent as we've seen in a long time in one minor league team, especially once Allard shows up.

ETA: Sorry, you can combine this with nsacpi's.

Albies in Miss is the biggest surprise for me. Allard not even making it to full season ball is hopefully nothing to worry about. He only pitched 6 innings in rookie ball last year, so it probably isn't too surprising to see him held out of full season leagues.

They're bringing him along slowly due to the back issue that affected him last year. Not supposed to start pitching in games til late April / early May.

Toscano, man of mystery, making his pro debut with Mississippi. Says something about what he might be capable of.

I think this was the most bizarre move under the Johns. It wasn't a ton of money but it was way more than should have been given.

Kind of surprised that Isranel Wilson isn't in Rome. Anyone know why he and Juan Yepez aren't?

Somewhat random, but I'm really quite disappointed to see Jorge Zavala cut. He was one of those RP prospects that I was really excited to see move through the system. I wonder what happened to him.

Same here. I am not sure why they'd do so as he was impressive in a number of games I saw him pitch last year.

I guess the biggest surprise is Albies in Mississippi and Swanson in Carolina, but this is Swanson's first year in full season ball so when I step back I can understand it.

Most interesting name is Steve Kent, a one-time Braves' prospect out of Australia who last pitched in the Braves' system in 2011. Lots of arm problems as I recall. He's been pitching in the Australian Baseball League, so it will be interesting to see if he has recovered and how effective he will be. I'm a bit surprised that Ruiz didn't repeat Mississippi.

Everyone else is pretty much where I thought they'd be with an exception here and there (thought Bird would be in AA).

Aren't we paying him multi-millions per year?

He signed for 6 million on a 4 year deal. But hey, at least he is playing for us somewhere unlike others we're paying similar or a lot more to go bye-bye. We could've had Joey Rickard and some other interesting OF's in the Rule V draft but we wasted money on Boni and then Stubbs instead. Sounds like a good plan to me, LOL!

Mississippi setting roster:

C Matt Kennelly, LHP Steve Kent, RHP Victor Mateo and OF Dian Toscano will start the season on DL

Gwinnett DLs: Fiegl, Texiera, Wooten, Schlehuber

Carolina DLs: Trepagnier, Tate (restricted)

Rome DLs: None announced
