2016 Presidential Primaries [ SUPER TUESDAY | 3-1-'16]

Congrats New York

you proved you are no better than the Bible Belt

how pathetic

You should read Douthat's column in the NYT.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/17/opinion/sunday/how-new-york-values-trump.html?rref=collection%2Fcolumn%2Fross-douthat&action=click&contentCollection=opinion&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=collection

I’ve written before that the Trump campaign is a kind of comic-opera version of a demagogue’s rise, a first-as-farce warning about how our political system could succumb to authoritarianism.

One of its many lessons is that if authoritarianism really comes to America, it won’t come slouching out of the dark heart of Middle America, wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.

A flag pin it will have, no doubt. But on the other lapel will be a button that says I Love New York.

One bomb that I think Trump could use for his candidacy is to announce that he will only run for one term. That announcement could ease some of the apprehension many have for his candidacy.

I absolutely agree with this, after all why do so many candidates talk about their "faith"? I also found it interesting that in one of the statistics I saw scrolling across the screen last night was that 84% of New Yorkers said Bernie was an honest man, yet right at 60% of them voted for Hillary. I think that speaks volumes, not only for New York but for the nation. Now this could be any two candidates, I really don't mean to set this up as a Bernie vs. Hillary thing, but I do mean to set it up as "I really believe candidate A is a good honest person who is trustworthy and won't lie to me" BUT "I"m going to vote for candidate B because I think they're gonna win anyway, or someone told me I should vote for them or some other BS reason". We talk such a good game on values but in the end being on the winning side means more to us.

Might work, but I don't know if his ego would allow him to do that. It would certainly bring a lot of Republican voters to his side.

I think whoever wins this fall is going to be a one-term President.

I don't see Bernie as all that honest, but maybe that's from me being a cynical middle-aged pr*ck who has had to work elbow-to-elbow with more than a few Bernie-types during my career. It's easy to be a gracious winner with a guy like Bernie and I think that's what people are saying. The schtick goes, "he's honest and trustworthy BUT . . ." And with Bernie there are more big buts than what you'd see at a Weight Watchers meeting.

You may well be right about Bernie and honesty, after all he IS a politician but 2 quick points.

1.) I was talking about New Yorkers' views not necessarily mine, they say he's the most honest candidate but I'm still gonna vote for Hilldog. I mean, sure vote for whomever you please but don't then turn around and say how important values are to you.

2.) And maybe to put it into a bit more perspective, just how hard is it to look like "the honest candidate" when you're matched up with Hillary???

Oh and I always tell my students BUT is only 3 letters long but it's the biggest word in the English language, because you'll be going one way in a lecture or in writing notes about something that happened, then you write BUT on the board and EVERYTHING changes. ;)

Right. Because we all know how good Trump's word is.

LA Times:

Republicans long have worried about how to survive as conservative GOP voters die off and are replaced by more liberal younger Americans.

A new national poll of millennial voters suggests that the 2016 presidential race has only hastened the shift they have feared.

The preference of voters younger than 30 for a Democrat over a Republican as the November victor nearly doubled in the last year as the presidential campaign grew in prominence, according to the survey by Harvard’s Institute of Politics.

Currently 61% prefer a Democrat in the White House, and 33% favor a Republican, the poll found. In a similar survey released last spring, the gap between the two parties was only 15 percentage points.
.........................................................................................
Most interesting points coming out of the past couple weeks is the re-dedication to down ballot races.
As HRC centers more of her message on the importance of state legislatures and House/Senate seats - (R) seems to be ready to stand down. Pulling money and political infra structure away from their presumptive candidate. Will be interesting to see how it effects their majorities
Am curious to see how Obama weighs in and how much down ballot campaigning he does.

I think the big--and probably only--fear for the Republicans right now is how the Presidential race may affect turnout. The Koch brothers are sitting out the Presidential race, which is going to leave a lot of money for them to spend on US Senate races and efforts to bolster Republican turnout in swing states. The US Senate may flip, but that has more to do with the map than anything else. I don't think the US House flips.

I agree with your assessment on Senate and POTUS. Sorta on the House and State races.

Listening to HRC the past few days I believe top level (D) see an opening.
With Trump taking the air out of the (R) balloon I see them with a turnout problem.
Like you said, Enthusiasm -- it is what gave (R) the 2010 success they had and could be their downfall

For all of the hyper press Trump and Sanders are getting - HRC is still out polling them both by a large margin.
In some cases she is out polling the combined totals of both Trump and whoever is his runner up !!

Let's also lok at the insane political moves some of the rebel states are making.
Closing Planned Parenthood, abortion, urban infrastructure and of course the ridiculous stand on transgender bathroom issues.

Those were probably vote getters in 2010 - politically 2010 seems a lifetime ago
