"Writing about reality TV, Sullivan says, "In such a shame-free media environment, the assholes often win. In the end, you support them because they’re assholes." He's right. But he leaves out that most Americans are assholes, too. We are selfish and we mostly just want to be left the **** alone. It's one of our greatest faults and one of our greatest strengths. It's why the post-Obama America didn't support the hopey-changey stuff when it needed support. We are selfish and we are ****ing lazy assholes. Get up and go vote in the midterms? Nah, **** that. So do you really think Americans are ready to put on the brownshirts? Do you know how much effort that takes? We've got cat videos to watch, goddamnit.

Trump accuses Cruz's father of helping JFK's assassin

It’s a "disgrace" that Ted Cruz’s father can use the pulpit to court evangelicals for his son, Donald Trump said Tuesday.

“I implore, I exhort every member of the body of Christ to vote according to the word of God and vote for the candidate that stands on the word of God and on the Constitution of the United States of America,” Rafael Cruz said in a video clip aired by Fox News on Tuesday. “And I am convinced that man is my son, Ted Cruz. The alternative could be the destruction of America.”

Asked to respond during his phone interview with the network, Trump called it a disgrace.

“I think it’s a disgrace that he’s allowed to do it. I think it’s a disgrace that he’s allowed to say it,” he said, before touting his support from Jerry Falwell Jr. and other evangelical leaders.

“You look at so many of the ministers that are backing me, and they’re backing me more so than they’re backing Cruz, and I’m winning the evangelical vote,” Trump continued. “It's disgraceful that his father can go out and do that. And just — and so many people are angry about it. And the evangelicals are angry about it, the way he does that.”

Trump also began to say that the elder Cruz was with Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who assassinated President John F. Kennedy, before he shot JFK. The National Enquirer alleged that Rafael Cruz is pictured with the assassin handing out pro-Fidel Castro pamphlets in New Orleans in 1963 in what a Cruz spokesperson told the Miami Herald was "another garbage story in a tabloid full of garbage."

“What was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the death — before the shooting. It’s horrible,” Trump said.

I would be curious to know what Rafael Cruz's organizations' tax status is. Seems like dicey territory.

So you want to jump on that sort of Trump bandwagon? Dang Trump is brilliant and scary.

And "whoa"? Really? That's the rhetoric used in African-American churches (for Ds) and in Fundie churches (for Rs) all the time.

And I am no Cruz supporter. I think the old man is nuts too. But...
 
This is the craziest political moment I've ever seen in my lifetime. The only thing that could trump (pun intended) it would be if Trump actually wins the presidency. Trump being the presumptive republican nominee is even more insane than the Bush vs Gore supreme court battle. What a time to be alive.

I agree. If the Republic survived Millard Fillmore, it can probably survive Trump in the event he wins.

(R) was and has been un willing to compromise at any level, whether legislatively or electorally.
Trump is the result of ideological purity or if you'd rather "I'm right - you're wrong".

for example

we could look at any number of policies -- can start with ACA.
Instead of siting at the table and involved in constructive criticism (R) has taken the my way or the highway (Trumps appeal - right ? ) stance of Repeal and Replace.

we could look at guns

we could look at the "A" word

we could look at something as procedural as choosing a Speaker of the House

on down the line

No, he is not. He's the product of populist, poor-middle-class angst. There's a world of difference between say Ben Sasse (where I am) and an unprincipled populist. His vacillating positions and growing support even in the midst of it reveals this isn't about ideological purity.
