In the end, it's going to be a net positive from the raw suckage of this season. No, it's not because of Schuerholz's PR in the USA Today article this morning. It's that over that last quarter century, they were never in a full scale rebuild mode, as we all know. The attempt was always to try and reload on the fly, thinking that there was a chance in the playoff crap shoot. Getting access to cream draftees - with ample payroll room - is a luxury they haven't had since (ahem) selecting Mike Kelly.

No but I have noticed the significant drop in his power and an increase in K%. The career high BABIP last year masked the decline in his game. He's still a good hitter but he's not worth 30 million a year anymore. It's a classic case of paying a player for what he did and not what he will do.

Hopefully they can avoid picks like that. I think the best case scenario is a turn around like the Nats had but they had the benefit of getting a generational talent. Hopefully a kid like that emerges in the 2017 draft.

I think the better course of action would be to just deal with it and get the max you can from Kimbrel. Speaking of BJ, he had 7 DRS a la Mallex Smith so far this year, though he's done so playing left field not CF. Russ2dollas might read this and say, see that proves defensive metrics are screwy. But I'd just note how much better Kemp's numbers are too and they are using the shift with both BJ and Kemp and so far it's helping them get to more balls. IOW, Padres have used the shift very effectively so far. But it is a small sample we'll see how things go for the rest of the season.

I saw the play last night, Lowrie missed about three months last year with same injury I think. So at best they get Simmons back in about three months I suppose.

Well, before the Simmons injury I was thinking they might call us looking for pitching. Now without Simmons they should look to next year as too much a long-shot IMO.

Even if a few people were ranting on the board about it, that doesn't mean there was any realistic possibility of unloading Upton without a sweetener as incentive. We all know that they attempted trades of bad contracts. Yeah, maybe there were a few people who think that real life is just the same as their fantasy leagues, but there was clearly no way that BJ and his salary was eligible to be traded without something really good added to the pot.
