Let's think about the philosophy of "property taxes"

It implies that it is actually the government who owns the property... not me. I bought a car. It's paid off. And I just got my property tax bill for $1K. What am I paying for here? Access to the roads? Then why is my property tax higher than my friend's because I have a more expensive car? Shouldn't we all be paying the same? And as long as I have to pay the government in order to keep something that I supposedly "own", do I actually own it?
 
Property taxes are taxes imposed by the local government, they pay for your police, garbage disposal, etc.

As far as I have ever known, property taxes are assessed off of home value which in most places is primarily based off of land. I think land is more important than anything else, but that's just my opinion, you can vote to effect things like that.

As far as the concept of own, the government owns the money you make, does that mean you own it? Couldn't they just take 100% because they own the money? Seriously why bother with moronic questions like that?

you don't understand you have a civil responsibility.
That is not a question

What is this non sense the government owns your money. You own your money and there are fees for living in the society by the rules our democratically elected representatives have created.
Should you decide not to pay those fees with your money there are legal consequences

So, it seems you have two choices
1) get involved and change those laws
or
2) have the balls to not pay the fees (taxes) and go to prison for these principles you so strongly hold

I guess there is the third which you have taken, and that would be stand on the side of the metaphorical road and shake your metaphorical fist
 
Libertarians often seem to have a blind spot about the externalities of their actions in the word. The very act of driving a car has externalities that Sturg seems to think that only other people should pay for.

Hmm... the question is why do I have to pay a tax for something I own? I paid the sales tax when I bought it. I paid the dumb state inspection fees to make get the stickers. I pay gas tax to fill it up. And I have to pay tax just for owning it? Even if it sits in my garage. Oh - and the kicker - I have to pay more tax bc my car was "assessed" in value at $40K, than my friend who's car is "assessed" at $5K... even though my car is more fuel efficient. Shouldn't it be the same amount?

The point of the question was - if I have to pay tax on something simply because I own it, do I really own it?

And don't even get me started on houses

And it's laughable to say that libertarians are the ones who think "other people" should pay for things... as you have a leading democratic candidate who has supported taxing people at 90%

Engaged to a young lady in med school actually... but thanks for your concern.

It's a shame she is going into a field in which she will be underpaid for her skills because the government has decided that her skills and education is a right to everyone else.

It all depends on if you have a personal property tax or real property tax. Most states no longer have the personal property tax that was applied to vehicles and other durable goods. Real property taxes are levied against land and buildings. As per your vehicle, you likely pay annual license fees and you may pay a wheelage tax. You (or the bank) own the items you have described.

As far as your loose concept of own, yes. I don't think they own it, but your silly idea that I bought something therefor that is that it's mine, is childish. The fact you don't understand taxation and its general concept and purposes is childish. I'm glad you reacted that way, realize that is how absurd it is to act like the government has no "right" to tax or ask questions like "Would I be better off with my own money"
