I'm not really understanding the recent trend on here of people writing off Ray and suddenly more interested in Senzel.

The only thing we know Senzel will do above average is hit for average. Ray we know will be above average defensively and be able to steal 20+ at minimum. He has also shown significantly more power in college.

I also think Ray is a better fit for our system. I get that you draft best player available, but with Rio Ruiz and Austin Riley at third, there's a decent chance one of them can be our future third baseman. Who's that guy in left field? Maybe it's Dustin Peterson, but he's not as highly regarded as Ruiz or Riley, and there's not much else in our system in the corner outfield spots.

What am I missing?
 
I'm not familiar with any of these guys but I will say that the Braves should try and draft the best hitter available. And if that kid is an outfielder then that's a plus.

I think the concern with Ray (and to some extent Lewis) is the amount of swing and miss in their games. Small holes in a swing in college become much bigger issues in the pros.
 
Does Will Craig, Wake Forest, make it out of the first round? What position does he actually play? Seen him listed at 3b, 1b and OF. If he is 3b is he worthy of 40 or 44? Not feeling any love for Lewis at number 3. I he is 1b is he worthy of 40 or 44. FF replacement after he is traded?

IMO, with Corey Ray, he has possible platoon issues with left handed pitching, and his value goes down significantly if he cannot play center field.

He doesn't really have the frame for projectable plus power in the bigs and he has a high potential of having platoon splits. I don't want to risk a platoon player with the 3rd pick in a draft when there are fewer split questions with other players.

I don't think I said Ray has projects for plus power. I don't think I've seen any draft writer say that either. But Senzel also doesn't have that.

I know a lot of people were talking about platoon splits from the last two years. I saw someone, I want to say it was a Baseball America writer, say that Ray had been much better against lefties this year.

I keep seeing it referenced in this thread that he continues to struggle against lefties though. Does anyone have the numbers? I was under the impression he was having a much improved year vs lefties.

If he has shown improvement against lefties, I think that's even more reason to like him over a third baseman who should hit for a decent average and not many home runs.
 
What about Moniak? Appears to have momentum. Climbing the draft board. Would the Braves go HS hitter over HS pitcher? I hope Groome is there.

Senzel has a much more typical frame to develop power and that development has started this year with much better power numbers in the toughest conference. Ray does not have that much value if he can't stick in center and there are legit questions if he can stick there. Ray just has that profile of a toolsey player who won't put it all together at the big league level. I think he's the riskiest of the top 10 talent, IMO. Not that excited about Senzel but much less excited about Ray. Would go Groome, Pint, Lewis, or Perez all over either easily.

Im an SEC guy, but the ACC isn't that far behind this year so I don't think that means much. But saying Ray just has the profile of a toolsy guy that won't put it together doesn't really make a lot of sense to me without actual numbers or reasons for what that even means.

I'm not saying Ray should be our pick by any means, but I just don't really understand the people talking themselves into Senzel over Ray. Both have questions, but especially in a system full of infielders without much power, I'll take Ray over Senzel without thinking twice.

I'm not sure what you are seeing in his numbers that makes you disagree with that description. He's not posting elite numbers anywhere (outside of speed I guess) avg, walk rate, and power are all decent but not elite for college. Ray has questionable power (which makes him iffy for the corner OF spots) and questionable defense for CF, so there is a good chance he's a massive tweener who's not worth much. Throw in the platoon splits issue and he's a highly questionable pick at #3. I'm not a gigantic Senzel fan myself, but it's pretty hard to find 20+ HR 3B anyway, so drafting a guy that's a good bet to post .800 OPS consistently like Senzel wouldn't be a horrible move.

I personally don't see a ton of difference between Anf. Grier from Auburn and Ray at the moment, and Grier will be going in the mid 30s to 40s. Ray has a high chance to be a solid regular, but is pretty risky as a top 10 pick.

I am cool with it if he would take an under slot deal, but I loathe drafting college players in the first 2 rounds.
 
Groome not pitching this season may help us to snag him at 3. The Phillies passing him up for Puk would be a mistake imo.
 
Andrew Benintendi is the 3rd college bat from last year's draft to get promoted to AA this year. The other two are Alex Bergman and Dansby Swanson. Ian Happ is likely not far behind them.

Last year's top ten of the draft is looking like a hell of a draft for bats so far. I really wish we had explored an Inciarte for Happ and Contreras type swap this past offseason. If we wind up trading Julio later and are talking with the Cubs I hope we can nab him.
