Jason Grilli Traded to Blue Jays

The Dodgers just released Alex Guerrerro. I wonder if the Braves find a way to take a stab at him. The money is stacked against the odds, but you never know.

Something must be up with this guy. Small sample size but in 8 games at AA he has an OPS under .100. Thats unfathomably bad.

I reckon the Braves were going to DFA Grilli after Simmons came back and worked a deal so they got something for him so the money is pretty much the same either way...

I guess... only reason this makes any sense $$$ wise

Yea, it was probably that they decided he was the odd man out and so DFA and release or do this, either way you pay about the same money wise. This way they can say they got a prospect back, just not one that is expected to do anything.

Seriously? I don't see why you think so, Grilli is almost done and hasn't been good since his return. If not for the Braves paying his salary like they did I doubt they get anything in return. Not that the prospect they got seems to be much worth mentioning.

That said, I support this trade as it makes a ton of sense. It's just too bad we couldn't trade Grilli when he had some value before his injury. But he needed to go as he was taking a spot for better options.

We were supposedly close to trading him for a teams top 10 prospect but he got hurt. Braves luck.

I sure hope we aren't picking up much of his salary, but whatever. We took a useless piece of our roster this year that isn't a part of our future and got something for him. Short of building a time machine end trading him before the Achilles injury last year, I see no better options.

All the more reason to like the deal IMO - looks like they're willing to start getting rid of the "dead weight" with little to no value instead of trying to rebuild something that's not going to turn into much anyway and start getting ready for next year - FINALLY.

The guys in the pen that have been pretty good are kept - Vizcaino/Norris/Cervenka/Krol. Withrow's back. One of Ogando or EOF can be jettisoned whenever Shae is ready.

Would love to hear that we simply DFA'd Johnson before bothering to activate him - he's really not worth the roster-juggling it will take IMO.

I know, that is why in part I was so annoyed at the timing. But that was then and this is now. Kinda like with Maybin, we missed our window only for different reasons. Hopefully we won't miss our window on Markakis totally...

I'm skeptical of Robert Murray's reporting given how often he's been wrong. He's saying we're paying all but league minimum of Grilli's salary and only getting Sean Ratcliffe. If so, that is a bad deal for the Braves. Would be better to hold onto Grilli and hope for a rebound. FWIW, I think Chacin is a more valuable asset than Grilli.

I am annoyed we didn't claim Neil Ramirez off waivers from the Cubs, Brewers did but we had first shot and didn't. I'd drop some of our dead weight like Grilli even if that means DFA or this type of trade to make such moves.

was Shae Simmons on the 60 day DL and thus a 40 man roster spot was needed to activate him? IF NOT, then this could be a precursor move to another deal that required us clearing some 40 man space. (which would be why we were gonna DFA Grilli and why we agreed to throw in all but league min in cash)

Disagreed with the Chacin trade, and disagree with this Grilli trade. We don't need salary relief. There's no reason to make either trade. Let both of them continue to try to build value before shipping them off for nothing.

Like how we traded Uribe and KJ for nothing?

This would explain the return. We at least save the $250K buyout for his 2017 option. Still, I would have given Grilli more time. He'd lost 2 MPH off his fastball. I guess they don't see any hope he gets it back.

Coppy was going to release him to make room for JJ otherwise, he said as much basically by pointing to getting JJ back on Friday, etc.

Why do we want JJ back on Friday?

Perhaps there's another Low-A RP we can flip JJ for shortly. :)

(Kidding, I'm fine with this deal and the Chacin deal)

I wasn't fine with Chacin deal but I am fine with this one, just not a deal I make to make room for JJ. It's a move I make to claim someone off waivers like Neil Ramirez.

Grilli deal > Chacin deal for me, though I wouldn't have made either. Neither deal is hugely consequential for the long run though, I suppose.
