Please no Ray... platoon player waiting to happen

Keith Law said on Buster Olney's podcast that if it goes Puk-Lewis at the top like he expects, we'd decide between Groome and Ray. He says our scouting department has been in love with Groome since the fall, but Coppy likely wants a college bat. He said it could be an interesting draft room discussion.

If Coppy forces them to take a lower upside college bat like Corey Ray, then he runs the risk of running off some good scouts similar to what Frank Wren did.
Braves should pick BPA and not for need. Getting a top college bat that's not BPA would be going for need since our major league offense is horrible. I think this is what happened with the HO trade. We tried to trade for need and incorrectly thought HO could hit.

Frank Wren didn't do that, John Schuerholz did. He was one of the forces behind the revision of the draft system and was head of the committee to do so. He would not allow the team to pay over slot for any players during his regime. So FW was forced to take players based on signability.

I think it's pretty clear the pick should be Groome or Lewis. Anything else will be pretty disappointing.
Agree with the principle of BPA since the draft is not a direct conduit to the ML like the NFL draft.
For those who would draft for perceived need (hitter) over BPA, I have two words.
Joey Devine.
But Lewis or Moniak are guys who I could feel comfortable with, if the next four guys project well.
I'm on board with not drafting for need, but I'm also not fully bought into the BPA route in the context of this draft format. I think Groome very will could be the top talent in this draft, but I'm nervous about his bonus demands. If the #2 guy on our board is a close second and the bonus is a couple million less, I'd very much prefer the #2 guy. That extra slot $ is likely to make a big difference on what we can do at 40 and or 44.
