International News, Rumor and Signing Thread

I don't know anyone who agrees with that either. What I do know is that every draft guru that I have seen talk about the question wouldn't take Maitan over most of the guys taken in the first round because he's 16 years old and unproven. That's not a slight against Maitan.

What makes Moniak "proven"? None of the guys in the draft are proven. Any player in the Draft/IFA could be a bust.

I'd like to see some of these genius moves start showing some dominance in the minor league levels.

So far - the only one who has lived up to the billing has been Swason - and he's not dominating by any stretch

At this point can we really say trading Wood and Peraza for the group we ended up with is that critical of an error?

The trade for him isn't the mistake I was talking about. The mistake was our scouting department falling in love with Olivera. We know for a fact that we had multiple guys get multiple looks at Olivera and the result was the front office being in love with Olivera. The problem is that Olivera isn't even close to being the player they thought he was. It was very quickly obvious. You could take one look at his swing and see it that bat wrap wasn't going to work in the majors.

I generally approve of the job the front office has done but I can't say that I trust their scouting ability fully. They were so wrong on Olivera that it gives me pause. I'm not saying I'm against the front office or think they should be fired or anything. I just don't have complete trust in them.

Swanson is the only guy traded for that's lived up to his billing?

Wisler, Mallex, Dustin Peterson, Jenkins, Gant, Ellis, Whalen have not? Folty looked like he was turning a corner before he got hurt too.

I'll give you Wisler.... and Mallex has been a nice surprise.

Not sure that the other folks you listed were really "billed." But sure, they've been fine.

D Peterson seems like a stretch. Jenkins hasn't been very good. Gant hasn't done much at the big league level... but I'm hopeful there. Whalen has good numbers, but so did Gant. Folty was billed as a top prospect but has struggled... I am hopeful for him as I really liked that trade when it happened

Peterson is 21 years old and hitting pretty well at AA, Gant went from being a fringy guy acquired for KJ/Uribe to knocking on the major league rotation in a year, Jenkins had a 2.93 ERA at AAA and just joined the Braves bullpen - certainly wouldn't call him disappointing.

I guess I just don't see those folks taking us to the WS... I hope I'm wrong.

The big prospects we've gotten - Newcomb, Fried, Touki, Swanson, Blair, Folty, Wisler, etc... Those are the ones who I'm hoping will hit big on.. It's early yet, and we have plenty of time to be patient because we're not going to be competing for a few more years

Who has said that? I might've missed it, but I haven't seen one person.

I definitely haven't seen it.

And this is all irrelevant. No one is doubting Maitan's raw tools, but for some reason when it's suggested that other players have less risk than a 16 year old it becomes a call to arm defend what's otherwise completely, indisputably factual.

Yeah, I don't see preferring Moniak over Maitan as crazy, at this point. So much can happen with 16 year olds, especially ones playing in different countries.

I think it's crazy, as would probably every FO in the game. Moniak is probably going to be good, but Maitan has the opportunity to be a MASSIVE talent. Of course you're taking a risk, but he looks to be a really good hitter even if he's not what people think.

I think anyone would say Maitan has more talent and a higher ceiling. But the risk, to me, is also so much higher. Moniak has a high ceiling and is certainly risky. I'm fine either way: if people want to gamble with more risk for a higher ceiling, fine. If you don't prefer as much risk, I can see going with Moniak. finance, however, taught me that risk is what pays.

Moniak has a 70 hit tool with great speed and projects to be a good CF, and most importantly he's two years older and more battle tested.

This whole discussion could change in a year when Maitan comes stateside and starts validating his raw tools in game.

It's funny. No one has really seen much of Maitan aside from what Keith Law and Ben Badler have said about him (and they are both huge fans) and both of those guys would take Moniak over Maitan. What source of information are you getting on Maitan that makes you so confident that he's heads and shoulders better?

Well said.

I agree with you but when I use this argument hooooooo boy!

It all depends on how you rate prospects. Some use "upside", some the player's floor, some look at tools over everything else....etc Most use some combo of all of the above. Personally, I look at tools and upside , and with those 2 things, I would rank Maitan higher as I think he has the best package to be an elite player over Moniak

Yeah, that's true. I rate Maitan way higher than I would Moniak. I don't mind the unknown aspect of it, I tend to weigh the upside more.
