Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

Ranking the top 100 players in MLB right now

20. Julio Teheran, Braves

The prize of the trade deadline is pitching like an ace once again. He's on pace for a sub-3.00 ERA and 227 2/3 innings pitched.

88. Freddie Freeman, Braves

Freeman's played in all but one of the Braves' games this season, and along the way he's batted .292/.375/.516.

Holy. Wow. That's way better than I would of given Julio.

Indeed, but when a list has Steven Wright above Sale, Thor, Lester, and numerous others including Julio, the author is clearly clueless.

I'm not sure you guys are interpretting that list correctly.

Now, though, it's all about the season to date. As such, the rankings you're about to see reflect nothing more than who's been the best in 2016 so far. In coming up with these rankings, your scribe paid no heed to what may or may not be sustainable. Some of the names will be very much at home among the game's best, while others belong to players who have solidly over-performed. In either case, we're not worried about whether the performances will stick. It's all about what's happened thus far in 2016 and 2016 alone.

Nah, we are interpreting it just fine, his list has no consistency and makes no sense. He has Julio above Lester, Fernandez, and DeGrom, despite all three having better stats than Julio by every single stat or metric. There are multiple examples of the same thing with different positions all across the 100.

How is having Julio over those guys based on performance so far this year clueless or laughable? BR has Julio with more WAR than all of them. You may disagree with BR's WAR, but it clearly isn't crazy.

And why not exactly? He is posting a .787 OPS vs LHers this season, and has a career .782 against them. By all accounts he is an excellent clubhouse guy, and is still a fan favorite. He signed for $1M this year, and will likely make about the same next year. He is essentially the perfect 5th OFer, especially for a club like the Braves who are already LHed dominant in the OF.

No NL team needs to carry 5 OFers. And Frenchy is pretty awful at CF, so he's basically only a corner OF.

I was going by normal stats (ERA, FIP, K rate, whatever really), not WAR. That's my point really, the dude is clearly not using WAR, because he has Wright 19th (who only has like 2.5 WAR on BR and 2.2 on FG) and Syndergaard has more WAR than any pitcher besides Kershaw. It's not where he has Julio that I'm talking about, his rankings are laughable because there is no consistency or logic.

One thing I am curious about though, can anyone tell me the difference between what stats FG and BR are using for their pitching WAR? Because FG is ridiculously low on Julio (1.7) and BR is a bit high IMO.

BR WAR:

Julio - 3.4
Lester - 2.2
Fernadez - 2.5
DeGrom - 2.7

We can all gripe with the pointlessness of the list, but I think it reflects more poorly on the consumer of content rather than the provider of content to complain about ordinal rankings based on not-so-set-in-stone criterion.

FG uses FIP whereas BR uses ERA. In other words, FG is a better predictor of future performance, whereas BR is better at looking backwards on actual value, IMO.

And the list is meant to be fun. If he based it entirely off of value, then he could have sorted the FanGraphs leaderboard. This is clearly a subjective exercise.

That's is not accurate at all. Julio has been better than all those guys. While I don't subscribe to WAR, he is currently 4th in the NL in brWAR for pitchers. ERA+ is right in line with Lester and actually better than Fernandez, despite more innings pitched than either one. DeGrom has better rate stat, true, but has like 30 fewer innings, which is quite significant.

FG uses FIP whereas BR uses ERA.

They have to be using something more than ERA though, otherwise Wright would be faring better in BR WAR. He only has 4 IP less than Julio and a .3 ERA advantage, but is a full 1 WAR behind Julio almost.

Well obviously the formula includes more than just ERA, but that's the primary distinguishing factor between it and Fangraphs' version.
