Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

I don't want cespedes, Desmond or any FA catchers. It's just not going to be worth it for us. They'll be weighing us down when we can actually be good.

I would consider signing a defensive catcher with good rapport/leadership to help bring along the young pitchers who are coming up. that would be worthwhile, I think.

the 2017 opening day thing, i take it two ways.

1- Barring a haul, he shouldnt be traded. As i've said many times, i dont think people realize how valuable he is given his team friendly contract. This isnt a player in arby about to get expensive.

2- I'm sure they'd like him to start opening day but with some FA signings, etc, the team looks kinda interesting next year.

I tend to agree that defensive metrics may be stressed a little bit too much. Assuming replacement level defense, all things considered I think hit tools are more important.

I'm not really sure why that would lead one to want Matt Wieters though. He's not a good bet to be a difference making hitter at this point and it would seem his defense is questionable.

I just don't like this free agency class much.

I think people realize that his contract is good and that this is part of his value.

You don't really get a massive haul unless you give up something of value. On balance, I do not think he is as good as his first half and I think his value now is as great as its likely to be. So, if Atlanta can move a #2/#3 starter for major pieces of the rebuild, I think its is worth it. Of course, I am ok with the Braves struggling through 2018.

Teheran won't be our opening day starter even if we keep him. This offseason is finally the year the mystery pitcher that was promised comes to Atlanta!

The is the kind of crap I can't believe is written by you. You go weeks posting nothing but thoughtful intelligent baseball commentary, and then drop insane comments like this.

That .734 OPS you are dinging Castro for this season is very close to the .761 OPS Weiters is posting this year, and even closer to his .744 career OPS.

Another number you might be interested in? $30 million, the probably amount of Castro's next contract. Much lower than the contract values thrown out for Weiters.

So let's see....

A 30 year old catcher with elite defense and .705 career OPS who will sign for $30, vs

A 31 year old catcher who is always hurt with terrible defense and .744 career OPS who will sign for 2x that much.

Choice is pretty clear to me who the Braves should target.

Again, this isn't so much of a Wieters vs. Castro thing. Really don't understand why you want to make it personal and take a shot at me, but I also don't really care. Pair whoever you like with Flowers - they're not going to make much of a difference to the Braves' offense. Go get Ramos if the Gnats don't lock him up before the end of the season and make Flowers Julio's personal Catcher.

The point remains that the only way this team becomes competitive BEFORE the end of Julio's contract is if it adds bats from OUTSIDE the system. There are available bats like that that DON'T cost anything other than money. Do they have questions? Sure. The thing is, if the Braves wait for those "perfect" bats, this rebuild will take a lot longer than necessary.

No one's arguing the numbers or projections here. What some of us are trying to point out is that the goal of this whole process has already been achieved - the system is WORLDS BETTER than it was 18 months ago. There's actual talent there now - some that will wind up playing for the Braves, some that will be used to attain other players who eventually will. No, the organization likely won't ever be able to cover up multiple mistakes and bad contracts like the Yankees, Red Sox, and others, but it doesn't have to be run like the Rays - signing a Cespedes or Desmond isn't going to destroy your chances (or budget) as long as they're somewhat productive.

You're acting like signing a Wieters instead of Castro would doom the franchise for a decade, and you're calling me "insane"? Seriously??? Back away from the ledge a step or two.

Seattle blew another late lead tonight, and could use some bullpen help...

Think we could get O'Neil or Peterson for Viz?

Texas getting drilled tonight.. they are leaking some serious oil...

The Twins destroyed them over the weekend too. They even beat up on Hamels that series, who had been a machine dominating a long stretch before that stinker (at least for his standards). Today Chi Chi was terrible again (probably his last shot in the rotation since Darvish is supposed to return after All-Star break) and Tolleson gave up 5 in one inning in relief. Texas has worst bullpen ERA in the AL.

And they've won 53. Pretty amazing

Yea, Banister has had a knack so far of getting a lot out of his roster with Texas. I remember when they were way back last year telling my friend Jeff who's a Rangers fan that no way Texas makes the playoffs with all their injuries and how far back. But not only did they do just that they won the division too. I thought Houston had it locked up and that Texas had no business sniffing the playoffs, just too many injuries. But after that I won't doubt Banister again, that was quite simply remarkable. The Hamels trade obviously made a big impact in making them believe too. But even with it fangraphs and most everyone agreed Texas had no business making the playoffs last year.

I think that it would put us close to 80+ wins and that's contention for the wc late in the year. If you think the team has to jump from 60 wins to 90 for it to be successful then I think you have unrealistic expectations. We add some offense, we hope our arms develop and that Swanson and Albies are ready for 2017 and we could win 83-85 games with the additions you quoted above. If not, we look to improve in other spots the following year or via trade. It's a process, gotta see the process through.

I think I agree here.

The defense really let us down in our terrible start. I think Swanson over Aybar is going to be a gigantic upgrade even if he hits like Inciarte for a year. We'd be hard pressed not to improve at the corners, 3B, SS, 2B or C.

If one of the pitchers takes a step forward then I think that team could be a shade over 500. That puts you in the building.

Then there are some big names in FA the next year. If we show a big improvement and have the money, maybe we can grab someone. I still don't see the braves paying the hundreds of millions they'd need for Donaldson et al, but it would be theoretically possible.
