I saw a stat today saying in 2008 there were 187 AfricanAmerican delegates to RNC.

In 2012 there was a very small number... This year there close to 100

As I recall, Patrick and Obama were friends with the same campaign adviser who cribbed from each other more than once. Patrick might even have been part of his campaign at that point. And Obama even said something like "heh, I stole that line from Deval Patrick." Might be off on the exact details.

Still, that doesn't make it any less dumb to mock an ESL supermodel borrowing banal parts of a speech.

The problem both sides have is that they are both horrible and it's easy for either side to make a quick come back. Hillary will ultimately win in the end I think because she has the backing of google, twitter and facebook. That hydra is almost impossible to take down.

We need someone like Thiel or McAfee to get in the social media business.
 
How did we end up with such a sad lot for candidates? It's embarrassing really. I still don't want to vote for either candidate. >:(

The most amazing thing to me is how wrapped up people get into one candidate, jumping up and down, yelling and clapping wildly. That kind of behavior is absurd no matter who you support. I'll never understand it.

On the Democratic side, it was Hillary's to lose (and she almost lost). I am still trying to figure out the Republican side of things. I think the problem on that side is that Jeb proved to be such weak soup and when he struggled, there was no center of gravity in the race. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king and Trump, for all of his foibles, had the best instincts for reading the crowd and identifying the weaknesses of his opponents. If Trump loses, my guess is the Republicans will re-think the debate strategy that started looking like the old Friday Night Fight of the Week (yes, boxing used to be on television every Friday night in the 1950s and early-1960s).

Overall, this has been happening for the past few decades and while I don't blame Karl Rove personally, he certainly did perfect the method by which the voting population is sliced into small segments and then stitched together in these very odd coalitions that that allow a candidate to prevail. I will say that both Trump and Sanders employed 30,000 foot strategies that somewhat diverged from the Rove methodology, but you can't wash that pattern out in just one election cycle. It has become nearly impossible for a candidate to win on a basic macro-vision.
 
Wow at the end of the Cruz speech. Trump came in at the end, because he knew Cruz was going to tell voters to vote their conscience. Hat is off to Cruz for doing the right thing. He knew half the audience would be unhappy.

I read an article the other day that said Cruz was planning on running regardless of who wins in November. I think the article was largely conjecture, but his actions tonight may portend that. Four years in politics is nigh on infinity so anything could happen, but if one is entertaining 2020 as a possibility, it would have probably been best to hold your cards extremely close to your chest and at least mouth the words even if you don't mean them. One can argue that this was the Reagan playbook in 1976, but that was an entirely different era and I don't know if a similar strategy would work in the age of the 24/7/365 No News Item Regardless How Minor Not Dissected to the Enth Degree Cycle.

I thought that Cruz speech, in the context of a Republican convention, was quite good. I mean, I got a giggle out of his casting the federal government as craven and inept, then mentioning the Apollo program as an example of "what freedom can do," but that's a relatively minor quibble.

His non-endorsement didn't surprise me a bit, but I have to give him credit for the sheer ballsiness of it.
