20ish million of that is money we already had committed to Olivera. So technically you can look at it like we're paying Kemp 3/30
The guys arguing about this already know that. Don't try to reason with information that doesn't fit their narrative.

I don't really see why you'd look at it that way but in prepared to accept that the braves do or at least want fans to look at it that way.

Why not? HO is a sunk cost that the Braves are paying regardless. Accepting that it's not hard to see Kemp as a 3/26 deal or whatever it is.
You just made the point very well. That money is spent whether you cut HO or trade him. It has no bearing on Kemp whatsoever. You can't claim to be paying HO and paying Kemp $18M. You spent the money on one of them, but not both. Its really not that simple bc we could have simply cut HO and eaten the cost. The team is paying that money, plus paying Kemp. We now have roughly 18 mil tied up per year in a sub 1 WAR player as opposed to roughly 7 mil per year tied up in nothing.

How is it not that simple? It's an additional 11-12 million or so for 3 years while clearing 8 million in salary in 2020. The total money difference from 2017 onward is an extra 26 million spread out over 3 years.
additional being the key word. There is no discount on Kemp. They are still paying all but 11 million of Kemps contract when they didn't need to. We are not "just paying Kemp 3/30."
Who cares? We have nothing to spend money on and maybe an $80m payroll if we sign a few scrubby free agents. It could be less.
We could light the money on fire or pay Matt Kemp $10m to hit 35 bombs and stand in left field. I'll take door number two.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. We didn't give up anything in terms of talent—even if Olivera turns into something, I'd just as soon it be elsewhere. I'm happy to have a guy in the lineup other than Fred who can put the ball in the seats more frequently than a lunar eclipse.
My SSS observations of Kemp's defense is that it's pretty awful, but I can live with that if he can make an impact at the plate. I subscribe to sacpi's observation that this is preferable to making a spendy play for a FA OF.
In other news, Matt Kemp became the newest Brave around the same time that Senora Julio showed maturity, clutchness, and veteran leadership in bringing the newest member of our brood into the world. Early scouting reports suggest a scrappy middle-infield type.

Exactly. He strengthens our lineup. He's not a clubhouse cancer. He's pretty cheap. It got rid of Olivera, and he's hit 15 homers with 42 RBIs awayI'm not in love with Kemp, but I'd take Door #2 as well. He's a lousy OF, but he's a legit clean-up hitter.
I don't hate this trade but I don't like it either. I would have rather not done it. The main reason is because we now have plugged up a place we could realistically improve with a very expensive and not very good player.
Now we have Markakis and Kemp. It'd be nice to be able to have the flexibility to use the corner OF spots to get younger and better. Not older and "meh"
Lastly... I'm sad how bad our defense has gotten. We went from one of the best defensive teams in baseball a couple years ago and now we have guys like Adonis, Aybar, Markakis, Kemp playing for us. Doing our pitchers no favors at all

7 million per is being wasted regardless if it is on Olivera or Kemp. So the only thing we have done is added about 30 million over the next 3 years, and there is a decent chance he's worth that.
