And people acting like we are going to be able to trade for the bats we need with pitching are kinda ignoring reality a bit. For all the talk about how valuable pitching was at the deadline, only one top hitting prospect got moved for pitching at the deadline, and that was for a Miller, a relief pitcher. Teams are still hanging on the young quality hitting as hard as they can, we are most likely going to have to draft our own or sign some expensive free agents. And meanwhile we have around 30 mil a year tied up in Kemp and Markakis, so the later part is unlikely to happen.

But no valuable/high quality starting pitchers were really traded before the deadline, aside from may be Pomeranz if you consider him high quality. Even Matt Moore was able to net a good piece like Duffy.

Would love JJ, but his drop off this season worries me a bit.

The Dodgers are more than likely going to offer him a QO or else I would consider it. You could front load it essentially giving him a signing bonus and buying prospects. Give him a 5/70 with 20M in the first year (for an example)

Chapman could be someone we do that with, but it sounds like he wants to be a Yankee, and we just got rid of one woman beater.

Melancon could be another we do that with, but his return from the Nats wasn't all that great. He may not have the trade value to make it worth it.

As much as we're going to give the casual fans the false notion that we're trying to build a winning team in 2017, we're going to also have a few assets we plan on flipping in July.
 
So what is the benchmark for deciding whether a front office has done a good job? Having a highly rated farm system? Wins and losses at the major league level? No of playoff appearances? No of World Series Appearances? No of World Series wins? Some other I know it when I see it criterion?

When a everyone on this site unamously agrees. That is when we can declare success. That shouldn't be hard right.
 
I think the overall direction of the rebuild is the correct one. There are multiple ways you can score runs, but none of that matters without solid pitching. There's been some really goofy moves (the acquisition of Swisher and Bourn was really odd). Going forward, we are going to have to beef up the offense (another consistent power hitter or power platoon would be ideal), but the foundation appears to be one that can be built upon. If guys like Ruiz and Dustin Peterson can step in and contribute, that would provide a lot of help.

I never bought the 2017 line. It's going to be a couple of years beyond that before we're there.

What players right now at the team you wish that we don't have?

I am not a big fan of Jace Peterson or Beckham.

I know a lot of people is not happy with Markakis. But just to see that is playing better that Jason Heyward makes me feel a lot better.
 
I like the little deals. Im worried about the major deals.

We still have a garbage lineup. Not many position prospects with a consistent industry projection of above avg.

I think we are going to sign some bad free agent deals this offseason.

I'd need proof they can get an impact bat via trade.

What all did we get for heyward? Swanson, inciarte, Blair, and Jenkins?
 
What bugs me is we have two major OF improvement opportunities plugged up by aging, unproductive, expensive guys like Kemp and mar kakis.

The Braves are in year 2 of the rebuild and have built one of the strongest farm systems in baseball. It starts there.

Think about God's gift to GMs, Theo Epstein. It took him 5 years to build up the Cubs.
 
Kemp is still movable if we wanted to. We could eat 3 or 4 million a year and trade him to an AL club. His power still makes him valuable.

Markakis has always been a more productive and far more consistent hitter than Heyward. I don't care what FICA, WIFI, or WAR say.
 
The Cubs also have the money to outspend any mistakes and fill big holes. Ex: Lester, Heyward, and Fowler. Possibly Chapman.

Oh man... I hope that's not the case. The idea of trading for Kemp is that we got him at market value. If we still have to eat money to trade him after two weeks trading for him then that's horrific.

Not at all. Look at what teams are paying Cubans who have never played a day in professional American baseball. Look at what teams are paying players taken at the top of the draft.

If you could pay down Kemp's salary a bit, say $4M per year and ship him off to a AL club to DH for a Gattis like package (Folty, Ruiz, Thurman) then it could be a big win. It would be a gamble, as all trades are, but you either trust your scouts or you don't and if you don't then fire them and go hire some you can trust.
