Starters

Newcomb has gotten a bad wrap. He's judged based off of his age, but he has a lot less experience than most. I think he has tremendous upside and definitely do not want to lose him.

Then it becomes an argument of value. Would I trade Newcomb and /or Sims for a TOR pitcher? Yes. Would I trade them for a MOR pitcher? Depends. I'm telling you that I wouldn't deal either for a Matt Moore type.

I like Newcomb much more than I do Sims. If you look at Newcomb's numbers you'll see that he's not getting lit up by minor league hitters. He has a 3.31 FIP which is good.

For comparison's sake, Giolito (who is awesome) has a 3.30 FIP with similar strikeout and walks numbers in AA. I don't know where the narrative that Newcomb is mediocre started, but it's simply not true.

Im not as high on Giolito as most people are, btw. If I was the Nats, I would consider dealing him now and go with Max, Stras, Roark, Ross, Lopez.

Newcomb is also 23 years old in AA as well. But, you are right, he's not getting hit quite as hard as I thought and it is mainly due to walks. He certainly has a much higher liklihood of pitching in the majors than Sims. I will concede he at least has a chance at being a long term piece in the rotation with Teheran.

I guess it depends on what Rizzo decides to do. That guy is masterful at choosing which guys to keep, which guys to trade, and which guys to extend. If he trades Giolito, then I'll take that as an indictment on his ability.

Certainly, that will tell a lot. They are really toying with his mechanics so I'm not sure that that is a good sign or a bad sign.

Sims has dominated AA at a younger age. He has upper 90s velocity and is unhittable also if he's not walking. He only had a handful of starts in AAA and struggled. Have young guys never struggled to start a new level? If he struggles again at AAA I won't be as optimistic but dude has the raw stuff of a very high ceiling. Have you even watched him pitch?

I've read reports on his secondary stuff being fringe. I think his stuff is moreso closer quality rather than TOR quality.

His changeup maybe, but any reports that claim his curveball is fringe are straight up wacky. Pretty much all scouting grades I've seen on him have his curve as 55 or better. And all the reports I've read on him recently say his changeup has improved a great deal. You don't have a K rate over 10 in AA/AAA with fringe stuff. He may wind up closing rather than being a top end starter, but I think it'll be because of the lack of control, not stuff.

Yah what auyushu said... His curve is a potential plus pitch and his change up has looked pretty good this year. I've watched him a few times now. He looks good.

Yes

I don't like any of our young pitchers outside of Allard. I think Fried could be serviceable for a few years ala Mike Minor was. Foltys got upside and I'd like him if he wasn't as mentally weak as Josh Hamilton in a crackhouse.

Get out Milwood. We ALL know you're joking.

I should be more specific. I don't think having one good breaking ball qualifies as having good secondary pitches, hence me stating that I think he has (at this point) stuff more in line with a high leverage reliever than a starter.I know about his plus curveball.
