I don't think we turned down anything. I think the board was all over Betts and sent a million trade proposals to acquire him. But Boston isn't dumb. And teams just aren't going to trade away future stud hitting prospects

Wasn't it Jackie Bradley? To peoples credit, many people on the board wanted him at his low point.

He's certainly been hugely disappointing this year. I can't imagine how good Washington would be with 2015 Bryce in their lineup.

I think it was very obvious we were talking about this year. If you don't think he's been a big disappointment this year, your homerism is at a new level.
You guys judge by such small sample and cherry picked data points that I never know. Of course, he hasn't performed as well as predicted. His extreme high last year (.369 BABIP) has reverted to an extreme low this year (.245). But, he's still a damn good player.

Basically a whole year of stats is cherry picking and a small sample? Really? In that case, take out his anomalous 2015 (just as small a sample size really) and what are his metrics? He's been a disappointment this year, no question.

The disappointment is relative to other worldly expectations. He has been very very good, but expectations were much higher than that.
That has some to do with it but it's not that simple. Harper is swinging at more pitches outside of the zone and the type of contact has changed. His LD% is only 15 which isn't good at all for a player of his ability. His popups have increased dramatically as well. What are the causes for these changes? It's not for me to say but the poor BABIP isn't just bad luck. He has some things to get straightened out.
Same as being 'disappointed' in players like Heyward and Andruw. You can be disappointed and still realize the value that the player is currently bringing.
While those issues may (still alot of research going into this) cause a lower BABIP, certainly nothing explains a .245 BABIP.
He's swinging at less pitches outside of the zone, but making contact with more pitches out of the zone.

Well, he's barely got an OPS above .820 this year and while that is certainly above average, its not much above average. Again... just for this year.
Yeah that's what I had meant. Thanks for the correction. And there is no doubt that those issues are causing a lower BABIP. 10% of his balls in play are automatic outs. His FB% has increased which produces the lowest batting average and combine that with a lower FB/HR ratio then the babip will drop as well. Would all of this account for a 245 BABIP? I doubt it but his batted ball profile isn't going to produce a league average BABIP. Some luck is involved (as it was last year) but imo it's only a small part of his issues this season.
I will give you a hint and determining how much higher than average it is. League average OPS is .739.
773 OPS for RF though. His OPS compared to the position comes out to a 113 OPS+
of course he has.
