Swanson getting the call...

Actually Caminiti was much worse. He couldn't even catch the ball... forget about where the base was.

I just remember a particular routine play--ground ball to second or short--and the throw was right on the money and it just popped out of Justice's glove like it had hit a cement wall and bounced off. The Braves traded Murphy later that season and Justice found his way to a more comfortable station on the field.

Yes. They were both very bad. I remember a similar play where Caminiti just dropped a perfect throw. Those were desperate days for the Braves and their fans.

Glad it got better.

You haven't lived unless you watched David Justice try to play first base.

Proud to say that I got to see David Justice patrol the OF for the Richmond Braves for 3 straight seasons. Also glad that there wasn't a forum, such as this then, as there would've been similar hand-wringing about his potential vs. lack of progress.

As bad as this year's team is, I still think the worst baseball I ever watched was the 1987 Braves. They didn't lose 100 games, but they were just about the most boring team (except for Dale Murphy) ever assembled.

Makes me think of Boever the Saver, and the outside chance that Terry Blocker was going to solve the gaping hole in CF.

I was able to watch him everyday as well. If fans really thought he didnt' develop as a 23 year old in AAA with a .261/.360/.430 line (59 BB: 66 K), they were simply dumb. He had a half of a year in AAA were he struggled badly. Then tore **** up in Atl.

Using the same publication for those two numbers? But yeah baseball america top 100 in 99

Chen #3

Lombard #26

Odaliz Perez #31

Kevin McGlinchy #47

Furcal #60

What was wrong with that list from the perspective of that time and having to project out potential? Of them, Lombard was the only bust, and don't recall anybody at Scout predicting his eventual demise. Think McGlinchy got hurt? Furcal was underrated, but he must've been at lower level then (Class A). Odalis was very useful at start of his career. Chen ended up being overly-hyped for sure and didn't achieve stardom, but had a lengthy career, as was mentioned.

The thing I always find hilarious is that the Braves were actually good when they brought in Caminiti. Rico Brogna's face-plant had the Braves scrambling for a first baseman. I guess the good thing is that Caminiti's struggles brought Julio Franco into the fold. Talk about a Hail Mary that worked.

That's why the team should think long and hard before trading Freeman. One of the biggest justifications I see for that idea is "we can find a first baseman pretty easily."

Ken Caminiti, Rico Brogna, Troy Glaus, Scott Thorman, Casey Kotchman, and the Franco brothers say MF what?

Even with the scrubs we put out through the majority of the 2000 to 2010 seasons, we put up about league average (overall, not 1B) production. Over those year, the average wRC+ for 1B were between 109 and 115. 5 of the 10 years were pretty much average. 1 year was pathetic.

Replacing Freeman would not be easy. Finding someone that doesn't embarass themselves with the bat at 1B isn't too tough.

Furcal jumped top 10 overall the following season. So yeah he was just breaking in on that list. Think Albies last year.

We found a first baseman.

I can't help wondering what might have been if Julio hadn't been out of MLB from '98-'00. He was mediocre with MIL in '97, to finish the season, but someone should have picked him up before we rescued him from the Mexican League in 2001. I doubt he would have reached 3000 hits, but he might have come close.

So what do you think the bump in attendance for Swanson will be? So say 5,000 more fans a night for the next 23 games left. Say the average ticket is around $25.. That is about 3 million in additional revenue, rounding up. plus food/drinks less expenses for extra volume. should be a nice revenue bump for the team.
