Great stuff from Sanchez, he seems to go back and forth with his starts from great to iffy. I'm hoping he stays looking this amazing.

Newk had a great game and could make it further without the walks.

Walks walks walks. Same thing every single time.

I hear you, but Newk only gave up 2 hits.

Sanchez with 9Ks today really makes up for his 3 walks too. If he can maintain a good K:BB Ratio, he could be at least a great reliever.

I am not sure if it is a pattern, but we always comment on Newcome's high walk total, but this game he walked 3 in the last 1.1 inning. 3/4 of his walks came after ~80 pitches. The reason I noticed is that we had this same kind of discussion a few starts back when he pitched great and gave up 2 walks in his last inning.

Is it possible that he is "getting it" but when he starts to tire out, he loses his mechanics? Has anyone watched him in person?

I completely agree and wanted to say this exactly. His strike to ball ratio is still to low but he is getting closer. His ERA has dropped below 4.

Newcomb vs sims in AA...

Newcomb (age 23)...

3.91 era 129.0 ip 106 h 56 er 68 bb 138 k .228 avg 1.35 whip

Sims (age 22)...

2.45 era 77 ip 48 h 21 er 49 bb 87 k .185 avg 1.26 whip

Which one has higher ceiling?

sanchez has talent and is still young. He looks like he's starting to put things together.

With so many valuing patience I think we will see walk and strike out numbers go up. Players are going deeper in counts. And w/o watching these guys who knows what kind of zone they have. The MLB umps are terrible so imagine A ball on a Tuesday afternoon.

All I can go on is scouting reports, which suggest that Newcomb probably has the higher ceiling. But I don't think Sims is getting his due in prospect rankings.
