Pitching prospects ending well

bravesguy

Danville Rookie
I am not sure I give a lot of stock in finishing out the season strong as an indicator of following year performance, but I do like to see prospects get it as the year goes on. Sometimes it just clicks. I have enjoyed watching the results of key pitching prospects especially. I decided to take a look at how they are finishing. I was amazed by the stats of our pitching prospects last 6 games (roughly month).

In Mississippi, they were as follows:
Max Povse.........ERA 2.03...40.0 IP.... 2 HR...8 BB...27 K
Lucas Sims........ERA 1.84... 34.2 IP... 2 HR... 22 BB... 30 K
Sean Newcome..ERA 2.37... 34.2 IP... 0 HR... 16 BB... 40 K
Michael Mader....ERA 1.99... 36.1 IP... 1 HR... 9 BB... 30 K (3 of the games were not with us)

If that doesn't excite about future pitchers in the braves organization having 1-2 come from that bunch, then lets go deeper. Rome were as follows:

Touki..................ERA 2.43... 33.4 IP... 5 HR... 15 BB... 37 K
Mike Soroka........ERA 2.62... 34.3 IP... 1 HR... 10 BB... 33 K
Patrick Weigel......ERA 1.26... 35.6 IP... 1 HR... 15 BB... 43 K
Max Fried............ERA 2.89... 28.0 IP... 5 HR... 8 BB... 32 K
Kolby Allard.........ERA 2.43... 37.1 IP... 2 HR... 11 BB... 37 K
Richardo Sanchez.ERA 2.18... 33.1 IP... 3 HR... 14 BB... 29 K

That is 11 prospects that could be ready within the next 2-3 years that have sub 3 ERAs, all roughly 9K/9 rates. I am getting excited about the coming season(s) watch.

This is Fried's FIRST season back after missing a good chunk of time. I'm as high on him as I am on anyone in our system.

Yeah, I would not be surprised to see Fried make a few Top 100 list. He's top shelf potential and has had a strong season returning from injury.

In all my time following the Braves, I can't ever remember this much promise and this many consistently good starts from our minor league pitching.

If next year goes similarly, we're going to be absolutely overflowing with valuable assets.

If next year goes the same with our AAA/young MLB starters, we're gonna need those assets in Atlanta

Me too! I love Fried. I felt like people came into the season down on his stock with injuries and all, but the guy has massive potential.

Mader has really pitched well since coming over from the Marlins (and he pitched pretty well in High A before the trade). Lots of arms who are going to be knocking on the door in the next couple of seasons.

I've said all along that we need about 3-4 REALLY solid starters (Allard, Fried, Wisler (I know the struggles)) from the crop and a bunch of more-than-effective BP arms... I think this team could be really good come 2018.

You have Mader listed twice, but thanks for compiling all of that. Our future definitely looks bright and this offseason we'll be able to use some of that pitching to acquire some more hitting.

I did not realize Ricardo Sanchez was doing that well. That's another trade that is looking like a steal.

Seeing that we claimed the guy we traded for Sanchez on waivers and he's back in our system, I think it qualifies.

The 40 man roster will not be fun to manage the next few seasons. The high, high end talent will of course stay on.. but all these #3 - #5 starters/BP arms are going to make it tough to make decisions. It should allow us to replenish the lower minors on a consistent basis.

I'm assuming we see a fair amount of trades to clear some of that up.

I think a fair number will fall by the wayside and make management of the 40-man roster easier. It has already started to happen.

Who has fallen by the wayside, really? Do you not protect assets like Whalen, Jenkins, Blair. Those are the ones that seem to have struggled at MLB. I think some of them is because they simply were not ready. I still like Whalen a lot, but dont think he was ready as an example.

I would protect those three. But I think a year from now some of them will not be protected.

I think trades will be the way we thin it out. I could see 3 of those guys (Povse, Weigel, and Mader) being traded this offseason.

No matter how many trades get done, I can forsee one year becoming a Rule V feeding frenzy of our pitching.
