September outfield mix? now that Mallex is coming back

It will be very interesting in the outfield now that Mallex is coming back. There is much speculation about who (if anyone) should be traded this off season.

- Marki of course is a board favorite to trade, and his 2nd half could have raised his value.

- Ender vs. Mallex is a common topic since both are such similar players (speed, little power, good defense)

Now that 4 quality OF candidates are here, what will the playing time mix be. Not that Coppy sets the playing time, but if you are thinking trading Ender, then he needs to play (of course it is hard to sit a guy that hot). If you think trade Mallex (or Ender for that matter) then Mallex needs to show what he will have going into next year.

Should be fun to watch.

This idea has been mentioned for months. Some posters here get so wrapped up in trade rumors and speculation that they lose sight of the fact that it's ultimately about building a contending team. That old cliché about the best trades being the ones not made might be pertinent here. No rush to trade an OF. Why not keep both Enciarde and Mallex? They'd probably still listen in on offers for Markakis, but wouldn't mind keeping him around for veteran leadership either.

when did we get 4 quality OF..

I know what you are saying though.

Ender is quality
Mallex looks like he might be quality
Neck had a quality 2nd half
Kemp we are hoping to be quality if he gets in shape.. But that has never been his thing.. So I don't see him being quality.. But I will be optimistic

I suppose I mean more for next year.

I'm ok with trading any player for the right return. But I would also be fine keep all four outfielders next year. Between injuries and slumps and everything else, this is the sort of "problem" that will sort itself out. I found it interesting that Muk played first for one game last month. Not that I want anything to happen to Freddie, but in some ways the extra outfielder is also our backup first baseman.

Ender plays regardless. He's too good to sit. Mallex plays regardless, too. He needs to see as much major league pitching as he can. The rest, I don't care about.

First thing I would do is keep Mallex down in AAA as long as they are playing to maximize the number of ABs he gets. It looks like the AAA team is making the playoffs, which can last into the middle of September. Finding enough ABs for 4 OFers over a 2-3 week stretch at the end of a lost season should be fairly easy. None of them besides Mallex needs to (or can) prove anything at this point, so Mallex needs to be playing in 80% of the games.

In the offseason I would be in favor of trading one of Mallex or Ender. Whichever one brings back the best long term piece at a position of need should be traded. Ender is better now, but I'm willing to bet Mallex will be equal to or better than Ender in 2018 when the Braves can realistically compete for anything. Ender's defense, and overall value, will be entering its decline by the time the Braves are ready to challenge for a playoff spot. Mallex will still be cheap and only 25 in 2018.

Realistically, What could Ender get us? Defensive CF is a value position.

Could it get us a Nick Castellanos? What about a Jake Lamb?

Ender should probably produce 12-16 WAR over the next 4 years at a cost of ~$20M. At $8M per WAR he has a surplus value of about $75M-$100M. The trick will be finding a team that values defense such that they view Ender as a 3-4 WAR player. Teams like the Rays, Cubs and A's are the types of teams who likely value players in that way.

A guy like Baez from the Cubs, or Berreto from the A's is certainly in play for Ender. The Rays would probably prefer the younger player in Mallex (close to $100M in surplus value assuming he is a 2 WAR CFer), who could be the centerpiece for a Longoria trade.

Teams like the DBacks don't seem to value players in a logical way, so there is no way they give up Lamb to get Ender back.

Not sure about rays... Kiermaier is better then inciarte at cf and has some power

I do like Baez though

Castellanos is a step down from Ender. Lamb can obviously hit, and I think his defensive metrics are skewed this year, I doubt he's this bad. So he would probably be a good return.

Until Kemp shows up at camp in shape next year I wouldn't even worry about the thought of having too many OFs. There have been public statements and presumably private conversations regarding Kemp's weight and conditioning, and if he doesn't get it sorted out by the spring I would just make him a bench piece or cut him.

If he does lose the weight, then I'd weigh the options of moving Markakis for a modest return or see what is available for Mallex or Ender. In any event, it's a definite next year problem rather than this year.
