TOP 30 PROSPECTS: New Year's Eve Edition

Not sure where to put this, but a BA Hotsheet chat indicated that Wiegel would be a top 100 guy pretty easily next year.

If it's the same thing I saw, he didn't technically say he would easily be top 100. But he did list him as one of 3 guys who could be the biggest surprise inclusions in the list. Which is still bonkers.

The other interesting thing from that chat regarding our system was the idea that Acuna's ceiling is roughly similar to Mallex's.

That's roughly stupid. Acuna has the tools to be much more than Mallex. But that's my opinion and yes, I've seen Ronald since the GCL! Watch him right now as a Single A player and watch Mallex and its not close IMHO.

Just relaying the info. I don't agree with him, but I'm not sure I have enough knowledge to disagree with him, either. He definitely knows more about Acuna than I do. Just thought it was interesting.

He said Acuna has the tools to end up with a little more power than Mallex but with less speed and SB potential. I didn't take his tone as negative, I think he felt that was a decent and somewhat positive comp.

I think the difference lies in what becomes of his power. Many Braves fans seem to project good power potential on him, but I'm not sure how realistic that is. And if he doesn't end up with decent power, then he projects as a solid hitting, good defensive CF with speed. There's a good bit of value in that.

Wasn't directed at cha Smoot. I am not a scout but I see these guys a lot. Acuna has the tools to be a STAR. That's the difference to me.

And then there's David Lee, scout at BP, who gave Acuna's power a tool a future 60 grade and said his was the 3rd most impressive A-ball BP session he's seen in 5 years, behind Gallo and Judge. So, shows what one scout's opinion means.

Yeah...I'm going with my eye test. HA. But yea, scouting is an inexact science. Some scouts take shortcuts and add on to what someone else said or fall in love with a player or hate em.

Lee is also biased as a Braves fan. At least with one scout's opinion, I would prefer one without a subliminal agenda.

Yeah, but he's pretty fair. He's not real big on Riley and said last year he wasn't a Jenkins fan. He's been behind Acuna for a while.

FWIW - just received a message from Brian Bridges. Will have a full-blown interview with him following my season-ending Top Prospects list (including his comments about it) on my blog in the near future.

That's awesome, man.

Good list. I would personally swap Acuna, Demeritte and Weigel for Ruiz, Peterson and Sims, but that's just personal preference for upside.

Trying hard not to get ahead of myself and get too many of the kids at the lower levels too high before we get to see them against better competition, but I certainly wouldn't disagree otherwise.

I can't help but wonder where our 21-30 would rank in most other systems. With a few exceptions, I'll bet pretty high... higher than 21-30.

Glad to see you acknowledge Castro. Dykstra has fallen off the map -- if it's a serious injury, it's his second in as many years. I Have also got to drop Swanson off the board. Prospect no more!

I have tweaked my list a little in the middle. I am going to wait until the season is over and they sort out the 40-man. So many players are still on the DL, some figure to be DFA, traded or otherwise affected.

Swanson keeps his prospect status if he gets less than 3 at bats tomorrow right?

He can actually have four. Doesn't have to be under 130. 130 on the nose works. Walked once today. Had he taken the pitched he whiffed on, he'd actually have a little cushion tomorrow. If he gets a fifth plate appearance after four at bats (meaning no walks, HBP, SF or SAC), I hope they pinch hit for him.
