Interesting Rotation Options Arising

Good timing as well following Hart and Coppy's mention that nothing's "guaranteed" Wisler (or any of the others) at this point.

Looks like the Cards are on the verge of removing Jaime Garcia from their rotation - and even making him available. His deal has a 2017 team option for $12 million. Not "sexy" but his numbers have typically been good, and he'd add a lefty.

Then we've got old pal Ervin Santana supposedly available. He's on an inexpensive short-term deal (for a solid option anyway) and has always been reliable at the very least. 2 years plus a club option for 2019 is a great fit IMO.

Adding both of these arms wouldn't be "splashy", but they're not likely to cost any of our top prospects, and they'd give us that experience we've so desperately needed WITHOUT much long-term commitment. They'd also be better for our situation than chasing similar SPs on the free-agent market since anyone of their ilk will probably require at least 3 guaranteed years. I know Coppy keeps mentioning that we've got plenty of money to spend, but I'd love to see these guys added rather than chasing most of the available options this winter if we could get them for some of our "surplus" types - Jenkins/Ellis/Gant/etc.. The bidding for guys like Nova and Hellickson is likely to get out of control given the lack of options, and would probably lead to them potentially being in the way within a couple seasons (certainly by 2020 when at least a couple of Newcomb, Allard. Fried, Touki, Povse, Soroka, or Weigel are ready).

I'm probably in the minority, but I think a 2017 rotation of...

Julio, Santana, Garcia, Folty, ???

with Wisler, Blair, and the guys that are left rolling through that 5th spot would be pretty interesting.
 
Would be down with Santana again, but really haven't followed his progress since departing. Still think that they're going to check in on Shelby Miller again as potential #3 to get his career back on track. With the mess that team's in now, the PR fallout has already reached its pinnacle.

Think they're going to target a bona fide #1 starter. Still think that they'll continue discussions for Sale. He'd fit the bill. Wouldn't even speculate what the White Sox might want in return.

Wisler has enough experience now to be #5. That'd be a good, low pressure role for him at this stage in his development. So, potentially Sale/Teheran/Santana or Miller/Garcia/Wisler with Blair and others as trade bait.

I know I'm definitely in the minority on this one, but if I were willing to give up multiple top prospects to the White Sox, I'd almost rather have Quintana than Sale. Quintana would be under control for an extra year and come with a slightly lesser acquisition cost, so you could pair him at the top of the rotation with Julio through the end of his deal. Sale will be $30+ million much sooner - if we're going after that kind of TOR starter, I'd want the extra control personally.

Definitely don't disagree about his health concerns, but if we're not going to go after a TOR-type I think both could be really good fits without costing much (dollar or prospect wise). As a one year stopgap, there's plenty of upside in Garcia, and if Wisler/Blair/Newcomb/whomever stepped forward at some point next year you wouldn't owe him any money after 2017.
 
Santana would be my first choice (Well, Sale is first, but you know). I think he'd be a huge improvement to the team.

Teheran, Santana, Folty, Wisler, Gant/Newcomb/Jenkins
 
Out of everyone, Santana makes the most sense to me. A solid vet you can count on and because of his age...shouldn't be horribly expensive to aquire. Will give you a couple of years until the young guns arrive.
 
Excuse my laziness for not checking, but how effective has Santana been since he left ATL? If we can depend on consistency and durability, then reaffirm my commitment to bringing him back.
 
Santana and Peavy would be fine with me. We just need another season 2 at the most for our guys to develop.
 
Santana at 2.7 WAR this year and 1.5 last year but only pitched 108 innings. He's been between 2-3 WAR 5 of the last 7 years. Depends on price and years but he's been pretty dependable and durable. Will be 34 next season.

His pitching style holds up well regardless of age - especially if we can get him for a good deal!
